There seems to be confusion on the board generally about location.
Someone may post their location as Washington, now do they mean the State, City in the USA or a town in Northeast England.
In the profile location is it possible to have a drop down list with countries and for USA visitors State too?
This could be pre filled in on registration from their IP address location, so all new registrations would have a country filled in.
With an option to change it or select "hidden"
Can the state field have the full name and not the 2 letter code, non USA citizens find the codes confusing such as MO is Missouri and not Montana?
What do you think?

Surely easier for everyone just to add their country should they decide to. I am all for 'If it's not broke, Dont try to fix' and the more thats
added means theres always more to go wrong. Only takes a second to add DC-USA or similar.

Some people enjoy the whole "being anonymous" thing. I think that if people want to put their location in, they can, just as they can now.
I wouldn't want to be FORCED to put in a location. I like having the option.

Yes, it's nice that you can be as exact, vague, or cryptic as you want. Some even use the "Location" field to make little jokes, I enjoy that.

Thank you for the replies.

The trouble is most people are lazy and don't bother or assume that the reader will know what they mean.
In my OP
With an option to change it or select "hidden"
Perhaps this is part of a bigger rant?
Of people assuming that everyone else knows what they mean, so they can be as vague as they like.
"But I knew what I meant..."

Maybe people like their location the way that it is. If people really want you to know, they'll let you know, if they don't, they won't. If
they're too lazy to add it in the first place, why would a drop down make them anymore prone to do it?

i usually hate forums where i am forced to fill in my country or my date of birth!
i share when i want to share,
and maybe some people might raise some prejudice when figuring out the country of residence,
here at ATS i love to play with my location and mood. it is wonderful.
if somebody is really interested, a question is only a click away
