One of the reasons I moved here to New Zealand was the landscapes-and I still am awestruck just by looking out my front window. I don't have my own photos available, but here's some of the more alien places here that I've visited:

Moeraki Boulders

Some 'explanations' for these are dragon eggs, Gamera spawning, dino dung, and ufo ball bearings....

pancake rocks

Not only do the rocks look like stacks of pancakes, but this photo is from a section that's been undercut to the sea, so that as waves come in, there's a geyser effect every few minutes.

otago willow with frost:

Tell me the tree isn't freezing the lake...

Tane Mahuta (Lord of the Forest)

yup, that's a tree trunk. Estimated to be 1200 years old, and 52 meters (170 feet) tall.

(Sorry about the random capitalization, the keyboard's not cooperating

I have seen pictures of the Giants' Causeway rocks (the hexagonal ones), and after being told they are completely natural, I have practically ignored all the Mars threads. It's fun to pretend aliens made some of those features, but nature does some funky things, even on Earth where we wreck a lot of it.

I wish I could spend my life just exploring the Earth - lots of beautiful pics there guys. Here's one from my backyard - I call it the Enchanted Forest. Overexposed & out of focus cause I had the wrong settings, but this was a dark forest and wouldn't of showed up as well otherwise. How many alien forest creatures can you find?

Lovely, no wonder we thought we had landed on paradise.

Beautiful and deadly.

HOLY CRAP!! LOL!! I love those mushrooms, talk about fairy tales, just dress up in a costume, stand under these mushrooms, and wallah, see? Fairies are real. I never realized that mushrooms could get this large.

So I did a google search and found Oregon's monster mushroom is world's biggest living thing.

findarticles.com...

The outline of the giant fungus stretches 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometres) across, and it extends an average of three feet (one metre) into the ground. It covers an area as big as 1,665 football fields.

I am really sorry that I do not have any pictures to contribute but I did want to mention that this is just about the most intriguing thread on all of ATS!

Nice Thread! The BEST on here! What could possibly be more striking than the unusual in your own backyard.

Here is my contribution:

Check out this website for many, many more images just as spectacular, if not more so, than these two.

Thank you for taking the time to read/review my first post!
