First pictures in wild of elusive okapi

www.news.com.au

THE okapi, an African animal so elusive that it was once believed to be a mythical unicorn, has been photographed in the wild for the first time, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) says.

Camera traps set by the ZSL and the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) captured pictures of the okapi in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The pictures have dispelled fears that the species had died out in more than a decade of civil war.

So which is rarer a picture of an okapi or a 'real' picture of a UFO?

It's an interesting article that proves that we still aren't always aware of what's out there.

Thanks for the great post. The creature is beautiful and so great to see it in the wild. I have never heard of it. Good work!

Article fails for not including pictures... see them here:
www.zsl.org...

Seriously though since when is this animal so rare? It was included in a childhood book of animals when I was a kid, I heard about okapis on multiple occasions.

The article has a text link that shows the pictures.

Read the words 'The pictures have dispelled fears' in the third paragraph...

It's cute...never heard of it before.

Looks like a cross between a deer and a zebra.

We have an Okapi at my local zoo. It is really a very beautiful animal. It is about the size of a horse. Yup... it looks like a zebra and a deer had a baby.

I had no idea that they were so elusive.

Hey, that's a cool looking animal. Too bad it's so endangered.

Thanks for sharing.

Think they have them at our local zoo also. (Omaha Henry Dorly Zoo)
If you google image search okapi you will find hundreds of good pictures.
I think they are freaky looking but a good kind of freaky.
