Conflict fear over Arctic borders

Speaking to the BBC during an Arctic patrol flight, Rear Adm Gene Brooks, in charge of the Coast Guard's vast Alaska region, appealed for a diplomatic deal.

Looks like the 'New Cold War' has just got a little chillier.. anyone thinking that this may be the real reason behind all the Georgia/Poland/Venezulan posturing and political chess that's been going on?

Could be a lot of wealth hidden under them thar ice caps..

we've already had the posturing between Argentina and the UK not only over the Falklands, but also of the territorial regions of the South Pole for the very same reasons...especially when it comes to oil..there are most likely to be masses of reserves down there under the miles of ice from the decomposed forests from the prehistoric periods prior to the current ice-age

All the players in the region already have their legal territory claims made and recognized by international treaties. Russia does a cheap publicity trick and plants a flag on the floor of the seas at the north pole. People go crazy claiming Russia is trying to claim more land. No, they are just pulling an American chain and yanking us around. Our leaders have to respond because Russia did something.

Bottom line this real quick. All the gas and oil in the region will be sucked out and used. It doesn't matter who, or if anyone, owns the land or territory. It will be a private company doing all the work and collecting the profits. All governments will get some form of kickbacks be it taxes or bribes.

Everything else you read or hear is fluff. It's nothing more than money and greed.
