Hi, I was wondering if anyone have any information on what special diets that certain group of people, yoga specialist, monks, would eat in order for it to affect their meditation session? I know that eating certain food would affect your body chemical, is it possible certain diet would allow the body to produce certain chemical which would benefit a person who is meditating? Or even have a clearer meditation session, Anyone with good information on this would help alot! please please! maybe someone who already knows this from experience!

Hi...I hope I can help a bit! I don't have any information about which food to add, but I do know which ones to omit....from experience, and many people will tell you this, a vegan diet is the one that makes any kind of spiritual work more intense, and a lot easier. It's not just the abstinence from eating dead meat that makes the difference, but by stopping dairy prodects too. For some reason, taking dairy out or your system makes your contact and sensitivity much greater. Animal products make us sluggish and insensitive. Obviously, alcohol is a complete no-no, as are ciggies and drugs.

It will be interesting to see what people add to their diets to increase awareness. I do this with essential oils and incenses which I make myself, and I also use gem elixirs and flower essences, which can all be bought, but are simple to make in a ritual way for your own use. Producing them for someone else is a demanding process though.

The body chemistry issue is interesting too, and I would be up for experimenting here and swapping notes on how it affects meditation if anyone has any suggestions.

I hope this helps, and I will be watching for other replies too.

Vegan would probably be best as it's the most "pure" diet you could have, so to speak. If nothing else you want to cut out PORK... there is a reason that most of the major religions forbid eating pork.

It's probably not recommended to meditate right after eating, same as the "no swimming 20 minutes after you've eaten" rule
. You are more likely to fall asleep if you have just eaten. In contrast, fasting may help you maintain your awareness and meditate better, but I don't recommend starving yourself.

You may also want to look into one of the various diets that "flush the toxins" from your body and do that for a week before any really intense meditation.

That being said, anybody who eats anything can meditate. It probably won't make a huge difference unless you're going on some all-day enormous spiritual journey.

TRUTH! I would love to tell you vegan, clean no booze, but that is simply not true. Many traditions say you need a little meat to ground you in this plane and I once had a friend Sunyata Saraswati that drank like a fish yet was one of the most sucessful and enlightened Tantric Masters today. He also ate meat from time to time to ground him. Look into it through many sources but you know yourself best if you are being honest.

It is an individual thing, but if you are truly conscious you just cannot eat meat, as for the rest it is also a matter of awareness.

Antar, I've heard that theory too, that meat is grounding, but I feel that the disadvantages outweigh the effects it might have. Intake of dead and tortured substance, which all meat is, will poison you energetically, if not physically, and grounding can be achieved by eating root vegetables, and dark coloured foods like aubergine, peppers, tomatoes and so on.

It's a very rare being who can drink and be as enlightened as your friend, for most people it's just too toxic and challenging. At the very least, I would recommend that people at least try abstinence properly to see how it feels, so they can tell the difference.

Yes Yes Yes

I am Vegan and my mental clarity has never been clearer.
Once you purge all then junk from your system you will feel like a new person.

This is true. The masses are told vegan and the leaders do differently. There can be no leader if everyone was on the same playing field. Take that however you like. Leaders intend to stay that way and lying to the masses is as old as man.

I'm going to agree with you that eating vegan does increase body awareness. I notice this after 2 weeks into eating vegan, I notice that my lungs were more sensitive then usual. They were hurting from my long term of natural herb intake. Usual I don't feel this pain in my lungs, but after eating a Vegan diet, it was as if my body was trying to tell me, that my lungs are in pain and I need to do something about it.

Also I do know that Buddhist monks could only eat solid food between sunrise and noon. After that, they could only drink liquid. Having food fully digest, and your system not busy at extra work, do you think it can make your body have more awareness?

Well, it's a little off topic, but I'd like to say that I experienced one of my most interesting out-of-body experiences several hours after drinking two and a half pints of Steinlager beer. I say this is a little "off topic" because you're seeking a diet that's condusive to meditation, not OBE's.

But that experience was years ago, and I've since become convinced that people who poo-poo alcohol as part of a spiritual diet are correct. Alcohol can profoundly disrupt sleeping patterns, and I've since quit drinking largely because of this reason.

Also slightly off topic, but if you eat sugary foods just before sleep you can tend to get more lucid dreams and OBE's.

I'm not talking about soda and candy, but rather like apples, grapes, and other various fruits high in natural sugars.

I do know that the Buddha was offered Rice-Milk With Honey before his enlightenment. Is there anyway for the honey to help with his enlightenment?

Honey and the sugar it contains would definitely aid you in OBE's when sleeping, but that is because it keeps your mind functioning. I'm sure it could definitely help in meditation, in small doses and a more organic kind.

This is from experience. When I omit meat I feel lost but substantial amounts ease the physical confusion. Also the bible mentions eat what is offered but do it for godly progress(main idea)

Everyone's body is different. I wouldn't say protein is all that bad, just depends on the person. I would say eating less would help. People that do hatha yoga tend to do this, and eat those fruits and veggies.

I don't agree with the eating of sugar before bed, no matter what kind of sugar. Your body fasts every night or should, which helps it repair. Human growth hormone is higher when blood sugar is lower. You'll go to sleep earlier to if your metabolism is lower.

There are different types of meditation. I would think classical Zen could be enhanced by a macrobiotic diet, but a more active type of meditation such as the way of the Rumi or Sufi might require something abit more substantial. Ti Chi or QiGong tofu perhaps.

I practice a group meditation of drumming. We prefer Corona and chocolate or coffee or green tea. Not actually a diet but used for energy to maintain the transcendental state.
