Two Russian bombers land in Venezuela-agencies

www.cnbc.com

MOSCOW, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Two Russian Tu-160 long-range strategic bombers have landed in Venezuela, news agencies said on Wednesday, quoting a source in the Russian Defence Ministry. Interfax news agency quoted Russian Air Force acting spokesman Alexander Drobyshevsky as saying "while in flight, the Tu-160s were escorted by NATO fighter jets" before landing at Venezuela's Libertadores military air field. RIA news agency said the two bombers would remain in Venezuela for several days for training flights over neutral waters before they return to their base in Russia. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez visited Moscow in July and said Russia's armed forces would be welcomed in his country. "If some day a Russian fleet arrived in the Caribbean, we will raise flags, we would beat drums and play the national anthem of Venezuela and the national anthem of Russia, because it would be the arrival of a friend," Chavez said in July. On Monday Russia said it would send a nuclear-powered battleship to the Caribbean for a joint naval exercise later this year. Venezuelan officials later said that four Russian warships would visit the Caribbean in November. Russia has criticised the United States for sending a sophisticated command ship and two other naval vessels to Georgia, on its southern border

I just love how biased the MSM.. while I don't like the fact that we have strategic bombers close to our borders.. we have to look at Russia that is being encroached by NATO..and The Georgian invasion of south ossetia which was sanctioned by this admin..And the supposed food and supplies sent via battleships.. and cheney visiting Georgia shortly after the conflict as a slap in the face Russia is merely slapping back.... I don't like this situation.. looks like we are in a Cold war part 2 folks..

There needs to be a balance of power.. We all have seen what the U.S is capable when no other force keeps it at bay.. same for Russia.. this world needs two super powers... because if theres only one then that one will start expanding...

There do need to be checks and balances...

I think that was the point in NATO

AND the European union (in part anyyways)

A lot of good it does anyone. America and Russia are on Ego Trips. We all know what happens when people get cocky though.

Are you in the Russian military or something? I swear I missed the part where anyone said the bombers were not only loaded but carrying a payload of nuclear weapons. Please tell me where you got this information.

Further, arming Hugo with nukes may be a geographically good choice but not a politically good one for Russia.

Right... so, is Venezuela the "new Cuba" for this Cold War II?

How long is it going to take to the US start embargos agains Venezuela? (if there aren't any in place right now).

Peace

This is just posturing. Basing missiles or two bombers in Venezuela is different than it was with Cuba. Striking us fast in the CONUS does not mean a hill of beans in 2008 as we have a fleet of subs patrolling the planet armed to the teeth with SLBMs.

The Russian bombers are no B-2s...

I guess what you are really trying to say here is that you know somebody is going to have to die.

Its not really that hard to get weapons where you want them to go. Russia and America have been at it for a very long time.

When people have Embassys in other countrys its a sign of problems. The U.S. and Russia have them...

ANYWAYS All you have to do is drop the nuke in the air from a plane halfway over the gulf and let the fuel take over. Not really that hard. THe pilots can turn away and MAYBE make it back.
I am proud to say that the U.S. has ways of destroyinf planes in mid air without having jets in the air. Not proud and chest beating... but proud that Russia has very negative intent and wants to start blowing stuff up and continue... America wants to destroy key people and key things and be done with it. That said im proud that we have the technology in our hands and not in theirs... After watching ... THIS... Im not so sure anymore. But I do know that by flying their Planes over there all they are doing is being the Bully in Middle School, Getting away with taunting and teasing... walking away slighly looking back. AND SO IS THE U.S. Im not sure howcome we are letting kids run government but its happening. The older generation has caused way too many problems for the younger generations to clean up. I have a feeling it will unite a lot of people when its all said and over... With less then a billion people remaning on earth (keep in mind that their are 6 billion at the moment)

I agree with you... An even playing field = a fair game. Now everyone can throw equally devestating bombs into each others backyards. The days of America out gunning small countries who don't fall in line are over.

It's now a "eye for an eye... missle for missle senerio..."

No, it isn't. Two Tu-160s in the hemisphere. you do the math on how many nuclear armed subs, B-52s, etc. are in their hemisphere and get back to me.

A hit and run by these two bombers, supposing they are armed and not intercepted in any would be suicidal. We know they are there do you think we are not defended against them? What are they going to do? Get to the Gulf, unload on oil terminals and split?

What do you suppose our response to that would be?

This balances nothing. It is two bombers, probably unarmed that we are 100% aware of.

You have read WAY to much of this BS.

I think it would be cool if they were preparing to bomb Bushs Land down in south America right after he leaves office!!

Joke. Bush is nothing but a coverstory. How much power do you tink the president actually has? Its like the King and Quenn of England... they arent a thing just a pretty picture to represent government (in our case our representation is... kinda backstabbing? Is congress dropping us clues??!! ) This whole thing is stupid. Let me move to Austrailia. The sheeple that are dumb enough not to pay attention to whats going on can stay here.

You think Russia or Chavez is gonna let America know their real agenda?

Just cause you trust your sources, (The History Channel to make you feel safe) don't think that they are all factually & acurate. A moron can figure Russia has always had nuke packed subs crusing all over the planet too... ask J.F.K.

You millitary hardware guru's crack me up... You always post the lastest millitary tech with so and so's... "We got a laser H-700's with stealth equallizer night vision high altitude awarness seeking gyro capacity with dual warhead warpspeed microscopic hovering ability that's painted black." .....

Your B-52's, Drones, and Black Hawk Up theory does'nt really mean a hill of beans if a Russian platoon can spray paint themselves to look like a league of Mexican maids and cross our border.

I don't think you uderstand how today's strategic bombers work.
The era where they have to fly over the target is gone. What you have on board is high tec missle tehnology. They don't even need to aproach the US border. They simply need to take off and launch the payload.

How do we know Russia doesn't have secret black technology too?Although they arn't as powerful as the old soviet union they could of kept certain secret programs going while dismantling there conventional weapons after the collapse of the soviet union.

What lies, You meen like this? Funny how the Russian bombers were escorted the whole way by U.S. fighters, So much for the Plasma stealth. Two bombers? U.S. Generals would fall out of their chairs laughing at the thought they are a threat to the U.S.

The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program — a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium — reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans.

The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions.

Considering the long range ALCM strike package of Tu-160s they would have to fly over the Caribbean Sea if they want to have a good probability of hitting anything other than resorts in Florida. The only other options would be to fly around the Caribbean Sea or over Latin/Central America for a flaking strike. With US bases in Puerto Rico, Latin America and the CONUS staring them in the face launching an attack from Venezuela is absurd. That is why, even if for the sake of argument we focus on military tactics alone, it's suicidal and not a very effective way of attacking the CONUS. These bombers were tracked the moment they left Russian airspace and will be tracked again the moment they are airborne in the Western Hemisphere. A Tu-160s strike package while very capable will not be very survivable when you consider that the US is the pre eminent world military power.

So even if we're in another dimension and the Russians attack us with two bombers and a few missiles there is a very slim chance of a successful result.

Face it folks, it is nothing more then a gesture and a largely symbolic response. It has been happening since before most of us were even in our fathers sack. Enjoy the day and sleep peacefully.

West Point 23 is correct. The Blackjack's are just for show. Of course they will be tracked. They won't have nukes onboard to prevent any accidents that might end the world.
There will US ships playing tag with any ships that exercise in the Carribbean. Russian aircraft will overfly carriers with Navy air escorts from several hundred miles out. Subs will slink around playing gotcha.
Cold war redux. The good news is that the Russians know the rules and the chances for conflict will be minimal.
