US scraps nuclear deal with Russia

The U.S. has pulled out of a civilian nuclear deal with Russia in response to the conflict in Georgia. The agreement reached in May would have opened up markets between the countries by removing Cold War era restrictions. However, it was thought Capitol Hill would have vetoed the deal anyway, citing concerns over nuclear access for Iran.

I can't believe that this story hasn't been posted on ATS so far. That deal was discussed and started when Bill Clinton was in office and is now being stopped by Rice because of the Georgia conflict.



”We make this decision with regret. Unfortunately, given the current environment, the time is not right for this agreement. We will re-evaluate the situation at a later date as we follow developments closely,” Rice said.


The one has nothing to do with the other - this is just a new step to the CW2
