Detroit mayor pleads guilty to 2 felonies, resigns

www.freep.com

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has pleaded guilty, ending a nearly eight-month drama that has transfixed the region, paralyzed much of city business and halted a political career that once held such promise....In a courtroom this morning, Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two felony counts of obstructing justice by committing perjury. He will spend four months in jail, pay up to $1 million in restitution, and serve five years' probation. He also agreed not to run for office during that five-year span.

In addition, the mayor agreed to a no-contest plea to one count of felonious assault for shoving a sheriff's deputy in July who had tried to serve a subpoena on Kilpatrick's friend. He agreed to serve four months on that charge, too, but it will be served at the same time as his other sentence.

Kilpatrick in court this morning in Detroit, before admitting "I lied under oath" during depositions for the felonies for which he plead guilty today.

This once-proud city, representative of so much, both good and not-so-good, that the United States stands for, has suffered for far too long because of this arrogant and wholly despicable "public servant." He has shamed himself, his family, his city and his state. Hopefully, the city of Detroit can recover from this terrible wound and begin to address the gross negligence its elected officials continually perpetrate upon its citizens. Corruption runs very deep in this town, and ultimately it is the citizens who bear the brunt of these injustices.

As a native of said town, I have seen the Metro Detroit region divide to a degree that makes the greater nation look like one big, happy family. The race-baiting has reached new lows; remember, race riots in 1967 literally tore this city apart, and it has never recovered. A half-century ago, Detroit's population was around 2 million; nowadays, it hovers around 900,000. The majority of streets in Detroit have known drug houses on them. The school system is insolvent and on the verge of being taken over by the state. The graduation rate is less than 25%; the lowest in the nation amongst "big" cities. The "Big 3" auto-makers are facing their worst times since Henry Ford revolutionized the world by perfecting the assembly line and mass-producing the Model T. And, as shown, the political scene has been sullied even more by the deplorable actions of the mayor.

And then there's the Lions...

Many residents of the metropolitan area want to fight, back and forth, along the same old, tired racial lines. But what is the real solution here? Surely, these problems exist in many big cities across the US: rampant crime, corrupt officials, weak schools, over-worked law enforcement, and thinly-veiled [if at all] racial division.

What is the solution to this national epidemic? This pitiful display of how pride does, indeed, go before the fall may sadly be just another example of the decay of what my country should, be all rights, stand for. There are, of course, far deeper issues at work here...

Would anyone care to chip in?
