With jobs scarce, sales of one-way tickets to Mexico are up

"You can't survive like before," said Ramos, 28, standing in front of the clapboard depot building with its low-slung porch filled with passengers and suitcases.

When times were good, Ramos worked 16 hours a day at two restaurants, five days a week. His weekly check was $520. But for months, bosses have slashed his schedule. He was lucky to work six hours a day for two or three days, bringing in just $117 a week.

"It got to the point where you can't pay rent, you can't pay the bills," he said.

Sounds like the Mexicans here are facing the same problems here, as Americans are.

But when we can no longer pay the rent, where are we Americans supposed to run to?
I have been trying to figure this out myself. End up homeless with your family? There has to be something better, somewhere else...

That's the one thing about illegal aliens that you rarely hear about, they have no loyalty. Bad things happen here and they can just leave while we're here cleaning up the mess. Or after we give them all free healthcare coverage and go into debt (see California), we'll still be paying their bills even though they are in a different country. Good deal for them to have that kind of mobility without any responsibility.

I can't speak for all Americans, but I do know a large number of students who have recently graduated who are looking for jobs internationally. The current hot spots for business students are China, India, and developing African countries. Since the untapped business potential is so huge in these areas, companies are looking to sell their service/business there.

As for blue-collar workers, I think the next option will be Canada. I would not be surprised if in 20 years, Canada will see an influx of Americans seeking citizenship or at least a worker visa there.

I think a solution to the current job loss in the long run (though it will hurt us in the short run), is to weaken the dollar more. When our dollar loses value, foreign countries will buy our products and open businesses here, because it will be cheaper to produce an item here rather than their own country. This is what the US companies have been doing when they open factories and plants in Mexico and India. Once our dollar reaches a certain low value, we will have huge job growth.

I don't know about the value of the dollar declining... My money comes from overseas, and conversion is giving me so much less now than ever. Which should mean the dollar is STRONG....

...So what is going on here? If the dollar is so strong, why are prices inflating to the extent they are?

I wish I could just up and ditch the country too. Where are we, and our families supposed to go when TSHTF?

All I'll say to anyone leaving is: don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out and good riddance. Seriously, I heard a radio ad yesterday for a local pay day loan company that left me furious. At the end of the ad they said (paraphrasing) "and we're the only payday loan in the Puget Sound that uses Moneywire, the easiest, cheapest, safest way to send money to Mexico." There's an old sailing theory that the rats are the first to flee a sinking ship... often even when a ship isn't actually sinking, but just taking on some water. We're seeing the rats abandoning a ship that I don't believe is going to sink.

Americans will never change.

American border security sucks, mexicans come here, people complain and make racists comments and say barely anything about the govt.

America govt. messes up on purpose american economy, mexicans leave, the people say don't let the door hit your ass.

Nothing will change, there will never be a revolution with people like the lot of you here.

God help you all, and I mean that because you damn sure ain't helping yourselves.

LOL!!! Thank you for sharing the ad you heard. I always get upset when calling for customer service, and needing to "press one for English"(, otherwise we just assume you speak Spenish, since you are in AMERICA)

How awesome there are so many people willing to help ship money out of the country.

About the rats and the sinking ship... Well, who knows. We have seen companies and rich people leave too.

Ahh Canadians and their moral high horse.

If the US economy really starts to tank and droves upon droves of illegal Americans come to steal your jobs while driving down the wages of the ones you can still get, I think that smug little attitude will disappear. Then when they leave after they've tanked your economy as well and head home...that is after taking all your socialized healthcare without paying into the system, after getting all the government services you are so proud of yourselves for offering, after causing tons of accidents while driving without insurance, and after driving down your property value by parking 10 cars on their lawn or living 20 to an apartment, I think you will definitely be saying, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out, pricks." When that happens you will be in a position to comment on the state of illegal immigration in the US.

What you don't seem to understand about US-MEX border security is that border patrol agents are discouraged, threatened, and even imprisoned for doing their job. Or have you never heard of border agents Ramos and Compean who are currently serving a 10 year sentence in a federal prison for shooting a border jumping Mexican drug smuggler in the bum after he tried to run them down with a van?

The American people DO blame the government for the lax security, but no matter who gets voted out, no party will close the border. The Democrats leave it open to pander to the leftist 'open border' crowd and the Republicans leave it open to pander to crooked business owners. No politician within 100 miles of DC would dare to act for fear of reprisal from one group or another.

What you don't seem to grasp is that Americans don't hate Mexicans because they're 'brown'. They don't hate Mexicans at all. Some even sympathize with them. Most do on at least some level. They are angry that anyone has come and negatively effected their means to feed their family. It's not that Americans don't want immigrants from any particular place; it's that Americans want people to stand in line and pay taxes like everybody else. It's only a few people who make racist comments against illegal aliens, and these people hardly represent the majority of Americans. You have white trash in Canada, too, even if you can't see them from your university, yet Americans don't paint you with that brush.

You don't have to pray for America. You had better pray that Americans don't ever start to see Canada as a big fat gravy train the way illegal immigrants see America...one that they can walk to whenever they want and know that there will be sympathy and guilt waiting to take them in.

lol, actually, it's Canada that sees the US as a gravy train waiting to happen.

When your economy began slumping, the Canadian banks began buying up the failing US banks like penny candy.

The point is, they know recessions end. And so long as a bank is kept alive, when it comes back, it comes back strong, soaking up the customers the other dead banks left bankless.

TD is the most notorious for this. Expect to see allot more banks in the states when this is over, with TD affixed to their names.

Thing is, most people wont have a clue what TD stands for.

Essentially, the worse the US does during these times... the more of the US Canada owns.

They may have a moral high horse, but they sure won't hesitate to buy your gold, while you still think it's lead.

You have to realize that this board and the US are full of people who look upon anyone from other countries or an accent as different and lesser than the rest.
Of course, illegals should go back, but those who have a humble little life here and work their butts off to do better for their families should not be disrespected in this manner. As long as they're legal, and have proper documentation, i do feel terribly for them- Strange is the fact that most Mexicans i worked with years ago, were all Bushies.
I used to tell them, they could go on rallying behind Bush, but the time would come when they'd be leaving and they used to laugh. How prophetic of me.

BTW, i also hear that Americans are going South too!

Yes. Protect the Canadian Taco Bells and all Canadian toilet cleaners from this horrible fate.

Most Canadians are nowhere near savvy enough to understand this. The papers have been going on and on about losses incurred by Canadian banks in the US due to the mortgage/credit crisis, just feeding peoples' fears. Canadian banks obviously are savvy though. Take for example the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC. You're right, most people in NC have no idea what RBC stands for.

It's pretty obvious that banks are always going to be farther ahead of the curve than average people, no matter what the locale. So what I mean to say is that banks everywhere think that every single person is a gravy train waiting to pull into the station. And they're right.

SNIFF::SNIFFF... I smell BS. If they were legal they WOULD NOT BE GOING BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those going back are ILLEGAL ALIENS!!!!, and have sucked the tit of this country far too long. I'm glad that the Feds are finally waking up and cutting money to hospitals for illegals, I'm glad they are going home. I would never be offered the SAME hospitality or opportunity in their country as an ILLEGAL so WHY SHOULD THEY in America????????!!!!!!!

Seeing as how I live in Canada, I can tell you that landscaping still pays $12-$25/hr here...unlike minimum wage or not at all in the US. That is, unless you're an illegal. I can tell you that construction is still a great job to have and it pays $17-$30/hr unlike in the US, where it pays minimum or not at all unless you're an illegal. Wages like this DO deserve to be protected.

Canada has its own groups of immigrants that do the dirty jobs that don't pay enough to draw native Canadians to apply. However, these immigrants are here legally and clearly aren't driving down wages to US standards.

This is such typical elitist New England blue state drivel. Yes, you're so enlightened dgtempe. You're so much smarter and more informed than all of us peons. The scads of racist remarks in this thread only serve to illustrate your point of how racist and bigoted Americans and American ATSers are.

BTW maybe you should open a newspaper once in a while. President Bush is a huge advocate of illegal immigrants. He may talk a tough talk (he may, but I never have heard him do it) but his deeds speak very clearly. He has done absolutely nothing to secure the US/MEX border in his presidency. He has failed to pardon US border agents Ramos and Compean who are now convicted felons for doing their job. He has done nothing to crackdown on businesses who hire illegals. There's a reason they say 'Viva la Bush!' The illegal Mexicans who are leaving are doing so because their job market is drying up, which can hardly be attributed to anyone in the US government. So I wouldn't quit your day job and start a psychic hotline if I were you.

Well, if they get to stepping, the job market ought to open up. American citizens can do the work too, just got to quit the laziness lol. I do see this as a good thing.
