Why Can't Republicans Attract Minorities?

I have read several comments how the audience in the Republican Convention were or are basically white. This is a true statement and I don't expect it to change.

Republicans have a real crisis on their hands if they don't find a way to attract more minorities in the near future.

Here is an interesting article why Republicans have a hard time getting minorities to vote for them.

Yet what can Republicans really offer these constituencies? African Americans are watching conservatives trash Obama as un-American, a closet Muslim, a member of a supposedly “hateful” black church. The message sent? African Americans aren’t really Americans. Latinos, for their part, are quite cognizant of the GOP’s strong nativist streak and the hateful anti-immigrant efforts that terrorize and divide families in a culture in which the family is preeminent.

Seems to me that Republicans only remember minorities when it is an election year, Democrats remember them when they are passing legislation.

McCain and Obama both agree on doing something about immigration especially with the ones already here. The difference is that the other Republicans don't agree with McCain and are quick to add to the anti-immigrant hysteria. How does McCain expect to get the Hispanic vote when Chertoff is out lassoing them up?
Hell if your brown you are looked at as an illegal alien until you prove them wrong.

How do they expect to get the vote of the younger generation if they are unwilling to accept that the younger generation is more tolerant and diverse then the older generation. Yes the younger generation for the most part have different morals and attitudes but still have a lot to contribute to society. But the Republicans seem hell bent on being the moral party when in reality they have some of the same moral issues within their own family.

How do they expect to get the black vote when they are unwilling to field black candidates for office. I am sure that their are a lot of black people who share Republicans view but the Party doesn't take the time or effort to seek and invest in these individuals.

These are just some of my observations and I'm sure many of you could contribute more reasons as to why the Republicans have problems attracting minorities.

I would suspect that the problem is that there is still racial discrimination embedded within the system.

There are several threads on this forum discussing this subject right now about racisim.

And as I pointed out in one of them, when the people begin to see their fellow human beings as "human beings" and not white, black, brown, red etc etc, then we all may see that much needed and wanted change that we are so desperately trying to acquire.

Short awnser? 40+ years of entitlement propaganda. Democrats pay lip service to minority issues, while republicans are truly in interested in issues that are inherantly pro-minority, without being seen as such. For example, small business are the key to the overall economic advancement of any minority population. Strong families allow minority populations to reward thier best cultural attributes, while weeding out the weakest ones, the differences in the success of the asian and black popuations over the last 40 years, is a near perfect experiment into the effects of families on minority success. While "pro-minority" policies lead to the near destruction of the black family, the almost complete lack of "pro-asian" policies had the effect of strenghtining asians commitment to education as well as thier family bonds. The simple fact is while most people think whites are the most succesful racial group in america, the truth is, Asians are. This is extremely interesting considering that anti-asian bias was almost, if not as, strong as anti-black bias for most of Americas history, yet asians with almost no policies specifically targeted torwards them, eventually rose to becoem the most succesful racial group in america. Equally interesting is the rapidly emerging probabillity that hispanics will over take blacks as in terms of racial success shortly despite far fewer "advantages" in terms of competing in american society.

The sad truth seems to me to be, that while democratic ideas "sell" better in minority communities, republican policies work better.

I'm hispanic by race and an American citizen by birth. I was born in Puerto Rico but currently live on the mainland. When you discuss minorities you have to realize that there is a lot of ethnic groups you have to address. Mexican- americans, African-americans, Puertoricans, Cubans, and then fill in the rest of the immigrants that make the rest of the minority.

None of this groups vote in blocks because they dont share the same agenda, meaning african- americans would vote for what is good for them, Puertoricans too, Mexican-americans too and so on and so forth. Even within their own ethnic groups they are sometimes divided.

There is no doubt that the Republican party has a problem attracting minorities, once they figure out that they could win by scaring the crap out of this country citizens and promising stupid ammendments about gay marriage to appeal to the evangelicals they realize that they dont need the minorities to win.

With that said you would be surprised at the amount of support that the GOP has in some hispanics sectors, specially the Cubans down in Florida that without their support we could be easily been talking about president Gore right know rather than President Bush.

The proablem is that the GOP looks at the actual economics, while the DNC simply spew demogoguery, such as yours above. Lincoln and Washington have a holiday. Now it is mostly known as President's Day to attribute to ALL Presidents but it was made between Lincoln and Washington's B-Day.

Anyways, it might have to do with the whole shaking hands with KKK Grand Wizards and saying they are good men of great character at those Super Church Sundays. It might have to do with the centuries of oppression and treating blacks, gays, Jews, Hispanics, so forth as less than human. It might have to do with putting men in power that literally wrote a book on how women belong in the kitchen and should have sex with thier husband whenever the husband wants. Never say no, unless they are on their period in which case they should go to a hotel and not come in contact with men.(A judge Bush put in wrote a book saying exactly that) It might have to do with the majority of their responses to seeing a gay couple is to hang them from a tree. Their response to seeing a black male and a white woman dating is to shoot the black man first because if you shoot the white woman first the black male will run away but if you shoot the black male first the white woman will stay and try to help.(Not kidding, actual quote, sure this was back in the 80's but still)

I'm from a much smaller city (New Haven, CT) and it's the same there. I couldn't commute by bicycle to work most days without being chased, having rocks and stones thrown at me, having people jump in front and try to grab the bars to "bikejack" me. Many nights I had to chase thugs and "gangstas" off of my front porch. I had to teach my housemates to handle firearms. Nearly everyone I knew had been a victim of a mugging or pointless assault and most everyone just expected it.

The white people there were and are still silent about it. Only occasionally contemplating some idiotic measure like banning spraypaint and pretending it will accomplish anything. Even more silent than the white people are the successful black people. They want absolutely nothing to do with the animal behavior coming out of the "ghettos" and try to use the remaining middle class white people as a buffer.

Note everyone how she specifically says "Post 60's" Because before then a black man could be killed for smiling at a white woman and the killer would be made Mayor of the town, maybe even the Representitive or Senator if he killed two black men.

NONSENSE: The real reason the Republicans have such a problem with minorities is that they have a problem with minorities. The rise of the hard right in the Republican party is directly linked with the bolting of the south from the Democratic party in the 60's over civil rights. For years afterward on of their favorite ploy was to play the race card whenever they could get away with it. Les Atwater played it for Bush senior in 1988 against Dukakis in the infamous Willy Horton ads. Rove played it for bush minor against McCain in South Carolina in 2000 when mailings were sent out suggesting that McCain's adopted Bangledeshi daughter was really the result of an affair with a black prostitute. Then there are the matter of purging the polls in Florida in 2000 where literally thousands of fully qualified voters (almost all from Democratic majority counties were prevented from voting.

With histories like these the Republicans will continue to have problems with race and minorities until they themselves get over it.

We can also use some figures from the FBI UCR Crime reports.Doing this shows that in 2002 while there was, according to the FBI UCR report, about 1 700 White on Black hate crimes, there were nearly 2 million Black on White crimes. Yet, while the statistics for hate crimes receive extensive media coverage, the statistics for interracial crimes are rarely mentionned. this is what leads to a mistaken and stereotyped vision of Euro-Americans and the way they relate to people of other races.

While the african-american community is presented as a victim group, facts & numbers show that the day of Jiw Crow's America are long gone, it is now blacks who are the most violent group toward other racial groups in America while European-Americans are the more targetted for interracial violence. Blacks are safer today when they are amongst whites than when they are among their own community. That isn't true for whites, who are not as safe around Blacks as among their own community

The Interracial crime pattern might also impact the hate crime statistics. It is likely that this kind of criminality also provides an opportunity for the criminal to act on his racial hostility toward whites. For example, known black gangs, such as the 5 percenters, openly express racial hostility and have beliefs similar to the Nation of Islam. The Geraldine Davidson Murder is another example an example of the link between interracial crime and anti-white crime; it began as simple mugging but there were very strong racist overtone, the criminals had also a history of hate crimes done while commiting burglaries. The Wichita Massacre during which Jonathan & Reginald Carr, two african-american who had previously attacked other european-americans, mugged, raped and finally executed five white victims by making them undress, kneel in a row then executing them, has come to many to symbolize the dramatic nature of black on white interracial crime.

The longest war America has ever fought is the Dirty War, and it is not over. It has lasted 30 years so far and claimed more than 25 million victims. It has cost almost as many lives as the Vietnam War. It determined the result of last year's congressional election.

Yet the American news media do not want to talk about the Dirty War, which remains between the lines and unreported. In fact, to even suggest that the war exists is to be discredited. So let's start suggesting, immediately.

No matter how crime figures are massaged by those who want to acknowledge or dispute the existence of a Dirty War, there is nothing ambiguous about what the official statistics portray: for the past 30 years a large segment of black America has waged a war of violent retribution against white America.

And the problem is getting worse, not better. In the past 20 years, violent crime has increased more than four times faster than the population. Young blacks (under 18) are more violent than previous generations and are 12 times more likely to be arrested for murder than young whites.

Nearly all the following figures, which speak for themselves, have not been reported in America:

According to the latest US Department of Justice survey of crime victims, more than 6.6 million violent crimes (murder, rape, assault and robbery) are committed in the US each year, of which about 20 per cent, or 1.3 million, are inter-racial crimes.

Most victims of race crime—about 90 per cent—are white, according to the survey "Highlights from 20 Years of Surveying Crime Victims", published in 1993.

Almost 1 million white Americans were murdered, robbed, assaulted or raped by black Americans in 1992, compared with about 132,000 blacks who were murdered, robbed, assaulted or raped by whites, according to the same survey.

Blacks thus committed 7.5 times more violent inter-racial crimes than whites even though the black population is only one-seventh the size of the white population. When these figures are adjusted on a per capita basis, they reveal an extraordinary disparity: blacks are committing more than 50 times the number of violent racial crimes of whites.

According to the latest annual report on murder by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, most inter-racial murders involve black assailants and white victims, with blacks murdering whites at 18 times the rate that whites murder blacks.
These breathtaking disparities began to emerge in the mid-1960's, when there was a sharp increase in black crime against whites, an upsurge which, not coincidentally, corresponds exactly with the beginning of the modern civil rights movement.

Over time, the cumulative effect has been staggering. Justice Department and FBI statistics indicate that between 1964 and 1994 more than 25 million violent inter-racial crimes were committed, overwhelmingly involving black offenders and white victims, and more than 45,000 people were killed in inter-racial murders. By comparisons 58,000 Americans died in Vietnam, and 34,000 were killed in the Korean war.

When non-violent crimes (burglary, larceny, car theft and personal theft) are included, the cumulative totals become prodigious. The Bureau of Justice Statistics says 27 million non-violent crimes were committed in the US in 1992, and the survey found that 31 per cent of the robberies involved black offenders and white victims (while only 2 per cent in the reverse).

When all the crime figures are calculated, it appears that black Americans have committed at least 170 million crimes against white Americans in the past 30 years. It is the great defining disaster of American life and American ideals since World War II.

All these are facts, yet by simply writing this story, by assembling the facts in this way, I would be deemed a racist by the American news media. It prefers to maintain a paternalistic double-standard in its coverage of black America, a lower standard.

Now the DOJ site will emphisis that Most Murders are same race to same race and this is TRUE, but this is because most murders involve knowing the victim
