BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Loud blasts echoed across Baghdad Thursday evening and warning sirens sounded briefly in the headquarters of the U.S.-led administration in the center of the city.
The sirens are usually triggered when guerrillas fire rockets or mortars at the headquarters in the heavily fortified "Green Zone" on the west bank of the Tigris river.

Attacks mark eve of Iraq war anniversary
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Two rockets were fired Thursday toward the Burj-al-Hayat hotel in Iraq's capital of Baghdad, the U.S. military said, and three Iraqis were killed by a bomb in Basra.

In the most recent incident, Police Brig. Thamir Sa'adon said the rocket strike took place in the Karrada district, the same neighborhood where a car bomb killed seven people and destroyed a hotel and surrounding buildings on Wednesday.

One of the two rockets struck the second floor of the hotel and the other hit an empty apartment.

Wave of attacks ahead of Iraq war anniversary
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide bomber blew up a car Thursday near a hotel in the southern city of Basra as a British military patrol passed by, killing three bystanders, the latest in a series of attacks just before the anniversary of the start of the U.S.-led war.

NBC News Baghdad bureau reported that several new explosions were heard Thursday night near the so-called Green Zone, where the U.S.-led coalition headquarters is based.

Witnesses said two Baghdad hotels used by foreign contractors, businesspeople and media organizations were shaken, but U.S. soldiers at the scene said there did not appear to be any serious injuries.
