If this does not fit here, please move it, but follow my thinking first.

What if terrorists used hackers (offering money, etc etc), or have their own "hacking cell" and this is a precursor of once again attempting to shut down the backbone of the Internet (13 root servers)
The financial blow alone would be devastating--no trading, no bank transfers, no ATM's (though on a separate network, it could be affected) etc.
No company to compnay email, no news service etc.
I worked for an IS company once...some fool opened Melissa on his email, the email "came" from the CEO of the company so the user who opened the email thought it was legit. Took 20 minutes to totally shutdown the WHOLE infrastucture (all address books came preloaded with emails for the whole company, once one was opened..kapow)

IMO this article IS scary since it appears they have been able to thwart a lot of security measures.
