(Tropical Storm) Hurricane Hanna Heads Up the East Coast

The National Hurricane Center has just (10am CDT AUG 28, 2008) announced that a new Tropical Storm named Hanna has formed in the Mid Atlantic. This could become a wicked one-two punch to the United States if it becomes a major storm and strikes along with Hurrican Gustav.

More weather is being formed off the coast of Africa which could become Hurricanes in our Gulf in the Next few weeks. Without a doubt we are looking at few months at least of increased oil prices. Buy Home Depot Stock Now.

That's true.
Maybe the US has learned its lesson from the last 1-2 punch it received.

In South FL we are prepared as far as infrastructure is concerned but further North not so well. Down here we have changed over to concrete posts for our electric lines instead of wood and changed traffic lights to steel posts instead of wood in some places. I think the cops were real tired of having to do traffic duty when every one of our traffic lights was damaged in the last hurricane so the government decided to mandate the upgrade. Everyone has their window coverings already here sitting ready for the most part as well as generators, batteries, and water stashed away. The stores here have a sale every year on those type of items so people can stock up and be ready.

Heres the new 5-day prediction chart. Looks like a turn south. It could still end up in the Gulf of Mexico.

Not too worried about Hanna YET! Seems we will have till mid week to know for sure where exactly she wants to go, however I have to admit watching satellite pics of Florida sitting in between two storm is rather nerve racking.

Hopefully the majority of Florida is still prepared from our test run with TS Fay and we'll be able to handle whatever Hanna throws our way with relative ease.

Hanna Struggling But Expected to Strengthen

The latest GFDL model has this storm strengthening to a Cat 4 and aiming for between Savannah, GA and Myrtle Beach, SC. My in laws that got flooded out of New Orleans live about an hour inland. Anyway the GFDL is just a model but has been of use in the past and no one is talking about it.

Heads up, East-Coasters.

Hanna's been behaving erratically overnight, consistently tracking further east than forecast. As such, NHC has adjusted her track further south and moved her inland for longer.



Landfall is expected less than 24 hours from now somewhere around the mid-SC coast.
She's a borderline TS/cat 1 hurricane with sustained winds at 65mph. There is very little difference between a strong TS and a hurricane, so don't discount her because of a few mph.

Hanna is a massive storm, with TS force winds 315 miles from the center. Fortunately the near-hurricane force winds will be confined to a fairly small area, but she's going to bring strong winds and a LOT of rain to a wide swath of the E. coast. Parts of FL are already feeling her effects, so get ready for the rain.

I'm in the path of this one.

We weren't supposed to be affected by Hanna in South Florida, but it has been raining and we've gotten gusty winds since midnight last night. Just got soaked taking the kids to school.

Those in the path, please be prepared and stay dry.

Heads up again, E. Coasters.

Recon flights are showing sustained cat 1 hurricane force winds in the 80mph range in Hanna. Don't be surprised if she's upgraded "officially" in half an hour.
