I really hate to bring this subject up, it seems so bizzare that in 2008 there could be anything like this organized crime going on, or that it's reach could be all the way to the whitehouse, but some old and recent events in this area brought me to a website, a one woman crusade to expose at least one area of this 'mafia', that she believes is headed out by an attorney of fame not only in our area, but anyone who has ever watched the show "matlock' would be familiar with. Matlock was styled after this attorney, minus the corruption. Anyway, I (and my family) had quite an experience with the 'mafia' folk a few years back, I will never set one foot in that county again, but the arm of this corruption, according to the site I am giving a link to, goes waaaay beyond just a small county in N GA. Bobby Lee Cook. The name is intimidating to anyone in this area. Don't get caught in Chattooga County, that's another given saying around here. I want to know how many of you out there have heard about all this, or have been personally affected by them?

an exerpt from her site:

My friend had nerve damage in his right hand that required him to use 2 hands to fire a weapon so we know this is bunk. The death was covered up with no reporting to the media. In case you don’t know, our Sheriff is BLC’s (Bobby Lee Cook's) puppet. God, what a mess we have on our hands.

clicking through her selection of 'Dixie Mafia' files on the site, reading through her findings and the comments by locals is surreal, but folks it is real. Miss Watson needs support, this town is meth ridden now, read on her site and you will understand that this is what is left of the original KKK guys, they are real, scary, and when compared to the italian mafia the deaths that have occurred are 3 times the amount . Referneces to the Connelly family, the Connelly family is BLC's daughter's husband/inlaws. Bill and Hillary Clinton visit Bobby Lee at his personal home, on the same road my brother, husband, and their friend found fields of pot growing years ago, and went to jail for taking some of it.

Be sure and read the 'connect the dots' article.

Another exerpt from her site referencing the Clinton connection:

Bobby Lee Cook Series: Ties to Organized Crime?

RomeNewsByWatson.com met for a good part of Friday with a Federal Source, a GBI Source as well as a private source, who have turned over Exclusive Investigative files on Summerville’s most famous personality, (besides Howard Finster).

The files are huge, and it will take me a couple of weeks to get a handle on them, but they cover the federal investigation of Cook for kidnapping and extortion by the FBI, during the Clinton Administration, the prosecution of which was stopped by Janet Reno’ Justice Department. Not widespread knowledge, but known at least regionally, is that Bobby Lee Cook had a significant relationship with Bill and Hillary Clinton, and prior to his election as President, and at least one time during his Presidency, Bill Clinton visited Bobby Lee Cook and a close friend’s “Compound” in Summerville.

Bobby Lee Cook had a partner/son-in-law, guy named Connelly if I remember right. My cousin, who is an attorney in Virginia knew him from some ABA meetings. Connelly supposedly shot himself last year. There was nothing close to an investigation and local law enforcement got huffy if anyone even asked.

My cousin says when he heard about it, he immeidately remembered that BLC's son, who had also been a lawyer, had also died pretty young sometime back. He shook his head and said "Lots of people sure seem to die around that old boy".

The Dixie Mafia is very real. What, you think a bunch of good old boys can't dip their toes into organized crime like the Gambino's and the Gotti's?

My friend here in NC has spoken of these people many times. He used to be a police officer in Mississippi and from what he says they are a pretty nasty bunch to deal with. Matter of fact based on what he is saying they control quite a bit in the deep south areas like Miss, Alabama and Louisianna and are heavy into meth trafficking and other assorted capers.

I can ask him more if you like, he seems to have been rather fearful of these guys so I imagine they are also responsible for a lot of violent crime as well.

Yeah, Connelly was his daughter's husband. BLC's daughter said he shot himself in the morning hours, but she didn't hear a shot (from a shotgun in the next room???) she had blood on her night gown, it is shown in photos from the scene in her bathroom with blood on it, she said her and Branch, her hubby, didn't sleep together, and that she 'found him' like he was. Hand on the shotgun, shotgun laying perfectly straight on his chest. No investigation took place. Her neighbors heard gunshots the night before, even called her house to make sure they were ok. A man answered and the neighbor says it was not Branch, didn't sound or act like him, but said they didn't hear it. The next morning the death was reported. No time of death was listed. The bloody nightgown and all other evidence was left. When emergency personell arrived , BLC and another attorney were already there, and BLC' s driver. BTW, his daughter is the main judge now in Chattooga county. They have it rapped up tight. Miss Watson is really in danger, unless she continues to make herself known, she risks her life.

Most recent strange death: body found in a cave in a state park there. No feds or state police were called in. Days later the victims name came out, but no one knows the manner of death, we probably never will. The truth will be buried with him, like all the others.

OPs it is meth county. That is what they call it. It is manufactured there like any other product is elsewhere. These guys control everything, even airspace. When we went through what we did, I had called the FBI in Atlanta for help. They sent out a guy, he came in and threatened me and my mother, said he could make us dissappear for 'telling such lies', by dissappear he elaborated by describing the prisons we could be buried and lost in, never to see daylight again. The deaths are mounting. I just recently found out that it is all over the south, just like you say. Something needs to be done. Those poor people live in fear like it's 911 every day! I know business owners have to pay up, just like old time racketeering. The loss of lives is unspeakable.

What is hard to believe, well all of it is really, but the Matlock thing, how ironic that Bobby Lee Cook is the character that so many people love, and Andy Griffith playing him, such a wholesome actor, playing such an evil evil entity. Only on Matlock they make him look like a good guy.

Just as an experiement, let me ask of you all to answer this:

If you are given generous funding to build a new jail, would you build it BEHIND the one story house like one that exists? wouldn't you tear down the older building and put the new one there?

Can you all figure out why they didn't tear down the old jail?

edit to add: Anybody want to take a guess?

This reminded me of another story, that of Buford Pusser, a real life sheriff who often went up against the Dixie Mafia, and inspired the character of Buford T Justice in the film 'smoky and the bandit'

This page is a good start, a very interesting story and character.

Funny you would bring up Buford. A lot of folks refer to him when speaking of the Dixie Mafia, and the Bobby Lee Cook fame. I honestly don't know what it is going to take to put an end to the criminal element associated with this man, but it needs to be done. I can't find the list right now on Miss Watson's site, but somewhere on there she has compiled a list of the murders, and relation to Bobby Lee, the Clintons, and sheriffs department in Chattooga county.

I know a cop, a cop for God's sake, that was pulled over one night while travelling back from Tennessee, he didn't do anything to get pulled over, he knew that, he also knew about these 'good ole boys' too. They took him to the jail, where he was raped, repeatedly, by deputies. He told his family about it, but did not go to authorities. They found his police ID while they had him, their threats on him and his family did not fall on deaf ears, he never went and filed charges. He quit being a cop too.

Yeah, I had no idea that the problem stretches as far as it does, this kind of corruption should be long gone by now, but it looks like it's hold is as strong if not stronger, than ever.

The original Dixie Mafia no longer exists. Most of the members are either dead or retired. Their ages would be in the 50 to 70 range. I met several of the members in the early 70's.

At one time Interstate 95 was known as " Cocaine Alley " as drugs were picked up in south Florida and transported north via I-95.

Most all large quantities of meth comes into our country via the Mexican Drug Cartel. The meth houses set up in our cities are very minor compared to the Cartel.

The drug trade is not limited to the south. The east, west and gulf coasts seem to be the most active. In my opinion, we have had a major drug problem in the entire US since the late 50's and early 60's. No city is immune from the curse of drugs.

It has only been in the past several years that so many people are hopelessly addicted to meth, prescription drugs and crack. In the past people would usually experiment for a year or so and then get back into society as a productive person.

The current situation is dire and very sad. I work closely with the young and not so young women that are incarcerated in our local jail. My concern is that they are getting medical treatment and legal counsel. Being an ex-junkie I can relate to and understand their plight. The stories I hear would curl your toes.

The lack of self worth and self respect seems to be rampant in today's young people.

Edit for silly spelling mistake.

I thought that Buford Pusser was the inspiration behind the old "Walking Tall" films (not the newer remake with The Rock). Having grown up in Georgia, I'm sure I've heard of BLC before. The good 'ol boy mafia is something that my parents and grandparents were very aware of in the area I grew up in. Having had a couple of great-grandfathers who were in the shine business, I've heard stories about certain people. The children and grand children of those people are the "pillars" of the community. The older ones who are mostly or nearly passed on are/were owners of such socially responsible enterprises as pawn shops, bail bonds, trailer parks, payday loans, slum lord type housing, and beer distributers.

Georgia is pretty unique in the layout of its counties. Counties in Georgia are typically smaller than almost every other mid-large size state. This creates a huge amount of constitutionally required law enforcement execturives (i.e. Sheriff). In the not to distant past and somewhat into the present you have county level political establishments that run thier own little fiefdoms with little outside interference. I've always thought it pretty suspicious that small county deputies could make the types of busts that they do on the Interstates in Georgia simply through luck. I've always believed that at least some of those were the result tip offs to allies within those agencies that allowed the local agency to look good while other shipments, distribution points were protected.

The smartest thing I ever did was get the hell away from that area. I do not miss your area at all. I grew up same place you live, and watched it go to hell in a hand basket first hand. I had alot of friends I went to school with just plain out murdered.

yes i understand....the place i have here in the valley is beautiful though....goosepond lake abd a BIG log cabin, no neighbors within 1 mile...it's the perfect place for me and my son...i have more fear from corrupt police here than i do thugs...but the mexican mafia is here...a fellow deeply involved in it owns about 15 stores in my town. BUT that is why i have my guns and i don't do the "bad things" that i used to that brought me around the mexican mafia. so honestly i fear the police here more than the mafia. i can tell you storeis that u probably wouldn't believe!

I have watched my city slowly come to growth proportions that match that of other surrounding cities, Rome Ga is considered the largest city in North Ga now, but cities like Summerville, they don't grow, they don't prosper, they don't want 'new' people around.

To Dizzie: I am aware that the Dixie Mafia of old is an empire that seems to have lost some of it's hold, but the folks in Summerville can tell you, it is very much alive and active still.

A corrupt southern politician that is friends with the Clinton's? No it couldn't be.I assume that this "good ole boy" is a Democrat? That must be a mistake! Everyone knows that the Democrats are the "good" guys. They fight for the little people and watch out for them against the bad old Republicans.

Oh my bad.I forgot that there aren't any Republicans in the whole state of Georgia.Having lived in Mississippi on the gulf coast for two years in the late 70's,I would say this was "business as usual".
If you think the Democratic politicians in Rome,Georgia are corrupt, they don't compare to the corrupt criminal politicians that come out of Illinois especially Chicago.

Obama '08, you'll get what you deserve.

I have lived in Summerville my entire life and I am nearing 40. Life here has deminished drasticaly over the past few years. Most everything you read in ms watson post are evient in life here. But thats not to say that all our folks in public eyes are bad, we do have a few good people who are trying to make a change.

The man that was found at the park was hung he had the same name as a guy here in summerville that was/is having issues with one of those referred to as a dixia mafia members.

Drugs run rampid here in our small town. It seems like when they do arrest someone they let them go if they promise to work with them to catch others and the cycle continues. I know of an incident here a lady nd her husband were caught with pills in wrong container, drug parafenial and pot plants. The were taken out to the jail stayed a few hours and one of the main city policemen dropped them off just above there place and they walked in. Things that make you go hmmm

I know of a man who sells perscription drugs to folks (sechule 2) the drug task force tried to get him a couple summers ago but each time he was tipped off so they never got him and he is a former officer and still has connections with the older ones they visit from time to time.

But I know this stuff goes on every where but it may not be as bad in those places as it is here.

Summerville is my home and I am proud to call it home. Just wish it wasnt so filth riddened with drugs, alcolholics, drunk drivers, robbers, murders, rapist and child preadators.

I live in Summerville, too. Where in the hell are the Feds?
This is so dangerous. Hard to believe this is America.
The website is factual.
