Apparently, they've discovered something quite interesting beneath Leavenworth, Kansas.

The article does call it a "city" but from the description and the pictures it looks much more like an expansive storehouse. However, there were
windows and doors so it does appear that some sort of business was conducted there.
The article also mentions about the possibility of use by slaves or fugitives. Kansas did enter the union as a free state but only after fierce
fighting between pro-slavery and abolitionist forces. Whatever its use, its existence was hardly even known by people who had lived their whole lives
in that area.
Hopefully, further investigation will yield additional information about the site though speculation is that the secret nature of the place may mean
very little will be learned.
