In trying to close a brief window that will allow simultaneous voter registration and absentee voting, Ohio Republicans are engaging in "blatant voter suppression," a leading legal expert on voting said yesterday.

"This is exactly what the law says and what it allows," said Daniel Tokaji, a professor at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. "If the Republicans are trying to close the window, they would be violating the law they wrote."

Tokaji, a frequent critic of Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, said she is "absolutely right on this one. ... It could be the best thing she's done in office."

Partisan battle lines are being drawn over Brunner's directive to county boards of elections, clarifying that state law allows a five-day overlap during which Ohioans can register to vote and vote by absentee ballot at the same time.

The "no-fault absentee" voting law has been in place since 2005, when it was passed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly and signed by GOP Gov. Bob Taft.

Ya know I have to wonder just exactly why its left up to the states to determine the how's and when's of voting?

I mean voting is a right... shouldn't the federal government be the one setting the standard?

Yea i agree....... Different voting laws for different states (Let alone different areas in a single state) Just doesn't make sense.

Voting laws acrossed the entire US should be the same.


That said it prob will never happen because if they did do it they wouldn't be able to mess with elections as easily.

Not even to mention the fact peoples votes don't mean jack anymore.. They haven't sense the advent of the Electoral collage.

Just doesn't make sense to me that someone can get the most votes (Popular vote) and still not be elected president. Oh.. And don't forget even if someone gets both the electoral vote and popular vote the electoral collage can step in and say oh no we don't care how you voted we are going to choose someone else..

Um, what does GOP propaganda and lies have to do with the GOP crying foul over a law they passed.

Anyways, how dare people's votes count! Grr, why do you hate America? The only votes that should count are the ones for McCain! We haven't bought and owned the company that makes the voting machines for nothing!
