Musharraf will step down, say Pakistan aides

Pakistan's beleaguered president Pervez Musharraf is to step down after nine years in office, government officials and a member of his circle have told the Financial Times.

A senior officer in Mr Musharraf's camp last night conceded that he had decided to step down to avoid a parliamentary impeachment that was likely to begin on Monday.

A senior Pakistani government official said that a deal had been brokered between Mr Musharraf and members of the newly elected coalition government, with the army playing a key role in the agreement.

First of all I would say that I will believe this when I see it...but if indeed it goes through it just goes to show how the political landscape is changing around the world. Former and current powerful and key allies of the current U.S. administration are going down and with that diminishing the U.S. influence in these parts of the world.
