Musharraf Is Expected to Resign in Next Few Days

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Faced with desertions by his political supporters and the neutrality of the Pakistani military, President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, an important ally of the United States, is expected to resign in the next few days rather than face impeachment charges, Pakistani politicians and Western diplomats said Thursday.

His departure from office would be likely to unleash new instability in the country as the two main parties in the civilian government jockeyed for the division of power.

Talk about something with huge rammifications on Middle East stabillity. Say what you want about his tactics, but Musharraf did at least work with the USA in the Afghanistan war, something which can't be said about many leaders in the region. At this point I think the best we can hope for is that they don't go with a more hardline radical leader and replace him with someone who shares his feelings of cooperation with the West. Unfortunately nothing in that region ever seems to work out for the best, so I have no reason to believe this will be any different.
