Russia Invading Georgia Heralds Return of Cold War

By: Dave Eberhart

Russia scholar Michael McFaul of Stanford University summed up the use of overwhelming force by Russia in Georgia this week as nothing less than “a signal to everyone that Russia is back — and Russia is going to try and dominate this region of the world,” according to a report in The Los Angeles Times.

Last week, South Ossetian separatists — supported by Moscow — poured machine gun and mortar fire into neighboring Georgian villages. Georgia retaliated by attacking the separatist capital Tskhinvali with artillery, providing the pretext for Moscow’s invasion of Georgia.

I have believed for a long time that the world was headed for another cold war. It’s an ominous sign when people begin to refer to 08-8-08 as a turning point is history as mentioned in the article.

Also, according to the article, South Ossetians fired the first shots in this battle. That goes against the reports that the Georgian government initiated hostilities. Right now there seem to be a lot of conflicting reports concerning exactly what is going on in the region.

This is a very relevant topic, with the Russian invasion of Georgia and it's open threats to former soviet states

Actually something far worse is starting. It is the beginning of WWIII and the prophesied Gog and Magog invasion. Long before the breakup of the Soviet Union, there was a prophecy that Russia would stop persecuting believers and become free for a short period of time. After that she would go on a rampage and be the ruin of many nations.

In Ezekiel 39, the Gog and Magog war, we see the fate of Russia and the US,

6 I will send fire on Magog and on those who live in safety in the coastlands, and they will know that I am the LORD.

This I believe is a nuclear exchange that will ruin Magog (Russia) and those who live in 'safety' or as one translation states, those who dwell 'carelessly' in the coastlands. I identify this as the US.

If this scenario pans out, Russia will increase it's aggression to the point of invading Israel itself, with Iran and other Middle eastern nations as their allies. Yes many other countries will fall along the way.

No doubt a good appeaser and Marxist sympathizer like Obama will be in power, trying to disarm and retreat as quickly as possible. Eventually Russia will just nuke the US, I believe without an effective response. After all Obama wants to unilaterally disarm. What will destroy Russia is God himself. There will also be a huge earthquake in Israel at this time.

Russia's invasion of Georgia was purely responsive. They don't plan on conquering that area of the world... they were responding to a city being shelled to the ground by Georgian forces.

Someone had to step in and help Tshinvale out.

Who better than the Russians?

Russia WAS going to be the mediators between Georgia and Ossetia in trying to find a peaceful solution...
... until Georgia surprised everyone by turning Tshinvale into a pile of rubble and blood.

Although I am no longer, I used to be quite religious and I spent allot of time studying Bible prophecy. In watching Iran for the past several years and now seeing Russia act out its aggression in Georgia I am starting to wonder if the prophecies in the Bible might be true after all.

And I agree; this is no time to elect a socialist appeaser like Obama. If we are heading into another cold war we need someone in office that will meet the challenge head on, not cower in the corner like modern leftists are notorious for.

And exactly how do you know that the South Ossetians did not fire the first shots as the article I posted seems to indicate? Or doesn't that fit the typical "Bush did it / USA evil" rubric that figures so prominently on the ATS board?

This whole event, helps McCain IMO. We've all seen the youtube video where Obama basically says he would virtually disarm the US.

He better change his policy, or risk losing in the general election. If I was McCain, I would simply make an attack ad using this video, alls McCain would have to do is "I am John McCain, and I approve this message".

You would have to be completely blind to not see how closely the current scenario follows the 2700 year old Biblical prophecy. Even Russia's allies were predicted, for example Iran.

Just wait Russia will become increasingly isolated and belligerent. They will probably launch a first strike and then start a massive invasion.

Interesting that Putin would attack Georgia, then hold for awhile, and then pull back, albeit under his own terms. There are several potential reasons for this, but in my view none make any sense without a review of other interesting Russian activities. Note that the Russian Navy has negotiated the re-activation of two ports in the Med off the coast of Syria. Also note that Russia is talking gas/oil deals with Mid-East states, such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar. There is a discussion about creating a new cartel, one which could rival or replace OPEC. Russia controls much of the gas & oil production & transmission to East Europe (via Gazprom), and is working vigourously to build controls over Venezuelan, and even Canadian oil. For what purpose might Russia desire such controls over much of the world's supplies of oil & gas? Take into account that the culture in Russia seems to be one which favors brute strength when it comes to reckoning with it's citizenry, neighbors, it's enemies and even it's allies. Basically, rule by fear. Communism isn't the new political machine for Russia. It may actually be a form of fascism, which feeds off from a zealous nationalist fever. National pride is high in Russia, especially since the collapse of the USSR. The citizenry saw their once powerful empire collapse, and now they are anticipating it's return. Will it be Putin who brings this about? Or, will it be another who is ultra-nationalistic. Will it be one who utterly despises the Jewish race? Now that Israel is discovering oil in their own land, will this be cause for Russia to invade and curtail Israel's hopes for energy independence? One thing is for sure, Russia is playing chess with the world, and winning, using Energy control as her weapon. Meanwhile, the USA is intent on ridding itself of hopes of reliance upon it's own oil & gas, and must find ways to protect the ozone layer despite the fact that Russia could care less about global warming. I don't believe Russia or China would gain significantly by attacking USA. First, USA does not want to attack them (it would cause such anti-war sentiment). Russia or China are being most successful at destroying the US by simply encouraging USA's self-destruction. US government is pressuring itself to downsize it's Military. US government has been demonized by the US press for conducting a so-called "unjust" war. Attacking the US would simply embolden the current weak American will and therefore awaken the sleeping giant. I believe we will see a weak, clueless Obama administration, who will simply be putting out little fires and catering to the interests of special interest goups, like ACORN, but not Israel. Yes the USA will self-destruct. No need to attack it. Attack Israel, who will be the world's next superpower. And, according to Ezekial AND Revelation, that is what the outcome shall be. Not under Livni. It is looking like elections may be required (shall see by Sunday). If so, Likud party is looking like it may easily win, and Netanyau is like Reagan. This is all very interesting.
