Can someone please explain to me why Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are not detailed AT ALL in Google maps?

It may be something very simply explained, but I am ignorant of the facts.

Then again, could it be something the US Government has asked Google to do? And why Armenia and Azerbaijan?

Yes, I can see that, but it is not DETAILED like any other place in the world, with roads and whatnot.

Also, I went to Wikipedia and it states "Editing of this article by new or unregistered users is currently disabled until August 16, 2008."

en.wikipedia.org...(country)

Oh, ok. I'm running google earth plus and I'm getting full street detail for most cities in Georgia. It's probably worth the upgrade in general.

Great! Thanks, but I still think it strange that they are blank in the normal version of google maps.

Maybe that's the date they have earmarked for the end of the current conflict/start of our involvement....?

Doesn't seem strange to me, wouldn't be surprised if when the whole Russian/Georgia conflict hit that Google updated the free version to have lower resolution shots so people would upgrade.

With the Wikipedia article, if you'd read the protection guidelines it says that semi-protection is enacted when vandalism takes place, which in some cases happens because of media exposure. Probably just more people searching for Georgia now that there is a conflict, and there are more people anonymously trying to put their crap on that page so they had to lock it.

google earth plus $20/yr for:

Why buy Google Earth Plus?
Intensify your Google Earth experience with these added features:
Enhanced network access for faster performance
Real-time GPS tracking and track/waypoint import –- for upload of data from select GPS devices
Verified support for Magellan and Garmin devices only
Does not support export of tracks or waypoints to a GPS
Greater-than-screen-resolution printing – for impressive hardcopies
Spreadsheet importer – to import locations from .CSV files

It doesn't actually say anything about better mapping detail.
So I don't know why you guys aren't getting the detailed maps.

Try this town: Senaki Georgia, it's near the Black Sea coast. I'm getting almost the same detail I get looking at my house in DC.

I, too, am unnerved by this. Today when I was talking to a friend about how google has erased all the city names and it looks like an almost uninhabited nation she told me I was crazy.

I think Georgia has about 4 million people? The zoom levels certainly don't show towns that would sustain a population that large.

I don't know what this all means, but I don't like it.
