First GB gold for Cycling - Nicole Cooke

Congratulations to Nicole Cooke and team GB for a brilliant win. And that was one tough road race.

Nicole Cooke claimed Britain's first gold medal of the Beijing Olympics in a thrilling women's cycling road race.

The Welsh rider timed her finish to perfection, powering off the front and away from Emma Johansson and Tatiana Guderzo in the sprint to the line.

Cooke, 25, was in a group of five that pulled away from the peloton in the final stretch to the finish.

She clocked a time of three hours, 32 minutes and 24 seconds and is Britain's first Olympic medallist in this event.

The 126km race was run in appalling conditions, with heavy rain making the road treacherous in places.

I can't believe she stuffed up the second lst turn and the other girls not take the race away from her, what a major mistake by them as none of them looked over to see where she was.

She has been the worlds best all year and a big congrats to her and her team.

She didn't. If you heard the interviews she did with the BBC etc. you would know that it was part of her tactics. She has done that road race route five times before, she knows every inch of the route.
