If you research their roots, you'll see that they are a figment of various societies' collective imaginations. Nothing more. They are the quintessential "boogie man", used to scare children into behaving. Only some kids never figure out they're made up, and go on to join ATS and tell everyone they're real. Which is funny.

Speaking of socialites, and the rich and powerful...the idea that these creatures could be killed only with bullets or weapons made of silver and gold, were to keep the poor in a fearful state, so that they could be controlled with more ease. Most people in that time period were too poor to afford bullets made of precious metals, so they were convinced that they were powerless against such an attacker.
