My question is, what would have happened to their money if we did not put it in a trust for them? Would it have been stolen? spent? mismanaged?

While I do think it was wrong what we did with their money, if they had tried to manage their own money without the technological advances our country had at the time, they would have been much more worse off then even now.

The amount the judge has granted them is barely anything in the scheme of things. I say we give them the money, and then let them fend for themselves - no federal help, no state help, no help at all. Or of course, we can keep their money and keep helping them. I mean hell, they make BILLIONS a year off the casinos that we allow to be TAX EXEMPT. They also have a much higher standard of living due to us, yet they still complain.

Greed is strong.

Yes, Yes, Yes. Thats why you may not have social security when you retire. The indians trusted the white mans government again and lost as they have throughout history.

The indian casino here pays the state millions per year in tax

It seems obvious you live in abject poverty, considering that statement.

Have you ever been on a rez? Take a trip to Pine Ridge, or Rosebud. Talahina OK(Not a rez, but plenty of poor Choctaws.

I'm pretty sure it's not a tax, it's the amount the tribe pays to the state for exclusive gaming rights. Here in Minnesota, the state gets $150,000.00 per year from the second richest tribe in the country.

Most of the 275 or so members get over a million per year from gambling proceeds, and I'm guessing they still get their check every month from the federal government, tax free. Yes, they need the money don't they?

Do any of you know which part of the treaties has been deleted from every source I've looked at? I have an idea, but I'm not sure so I won't comment on it.

i do not believe the irish are begging to be paid back for the way they were treated when they came here (look it up)

As someone with a big chunk of Irish ancestry (along with a bit of Iroquois and a few other things for added spice) , the Irish faced a brief period of hostility in the US, just like most European immigrants.

It was demeaning and even occasionally very violent, but none of it compares to what the blacks and the natives went through (extermination, enslavement, families broken up, forced illiteracy, forced religious conversion, etc.), and it was for brief periods, not centuries.

or the mexicans for the way they were "repatriated" back in the 30's (look it up)

No, but they campaigned for, and won, a formal apology from the state of California. (look it up)

or the Japanes for the way they were imprisoned during ww2 (look it up).

Uhhh... they sued the US .gov bigtime, and won $1.6 billion! (look it up)

nope that is it ..the blacks and the injuns...

But it's not!

It's also the Jews who survived WW2, the Armenians of Turkey, the Romans on the Carthaginians after the Punic Wars, the Allies in WW1, the... oh you get my point.

(look - it - up!)

Awesome research XmoteX!

Yep evidently, the American Justice system *can* work as you have pointed out.

So we have paid our debt to the Japanese, the Native Americans, and several others.

We are so close to full accountability.

Actually thats my new campaign slogan... "Full Accountability in 08!... Yes We Can!"

What a sham! So, who's supposed to pay for this? If they expect my taxes to go into paying off a bunch of Indians who can't get over their own history and move into the 21st century, I'll support military action against the reservations. Why don't we seize their casinos?

you my friend, need to wake up and take a closer look at whats really going on. You have no idea as to what the truth is, pertaining to this matter. So therefore, do some homework before you fill a thread with a waste of keystrokes.

Why don't I go back in time and cut your great great great grandmothers nose off and make her wear it as a necklace? Or feed her children to hungry dogs?

you know nothing of history, IMO, judging from your comment. At least pertaining to american indians. DENY IGNORANCE.....

go read American Holocaust so you can get a glimpse into what actually happened..
from a native and white perspective. The fairy tale you learned in school is just that. A fairy tale...

The us government has a long track record of broken treaties and contracts with Native Americans.

465 Mill really could do a lot for the people on the reservations, but it depends whose hands it gets into, because there are corrupt people in every race.

The problem comes in, you are asking CURRENT american taxpayers to pay for the autrocites that the forefarthers of america made. We are not the same people, we are not the same nation. The people that allowed that to occur are not alive, not are there direct descendants alive. The people that wronged the indians are not alive, nor are the indians that were wronged alive today. You are asking that people that commited no crime be held responsible and made to pay someone who had no crime committed against them. This is wrong. We as the american taxpayer shouldn't be forced to pay for anything. It isn't our responsibility.

There is an issue with the indeian reservations, for too long they have been given a quasy independent nation status, while keeping all the benefits of american citizenship. It is time for this to stop. They need to be absorbed into america, once and for all, or given there complete unfettered independance, and right to live life the way the see fit.

Again it's not about the autrocities that were carried out against them. It is about money that belonged to them, that was in trust for them and was mismanaged by our goverment, and they deserve their money back.

If you put your money in a bank and they mismanged it and subsequently lost some of it, you would expect them to repay you your money.

Sure, I would expect it, and if we did mismanage it, then we should pay a fine to them. The problem comes in, WHY ARE WE MANAGING IT. LET THEM BE FREE!. Its that simple, either they need to become u.s. citizens completely, or be given there own nation. Then crap like this won't happen.

If any group of people have a legitimate claim to back payment against the federal government it would definitely be the American Indians.

It is shameful how these people were murdered and poisoned with disease and alcohol. Virtually every treaty ever signed into accord has been egrigiously violated and many out right ignored.

How do you put a dollar amount on four hundred years of murder, theft and genocide?

I hope they win.

No, what I'm saying is: that's life. Some win, some lose. In this case, they lost. It was the way of life. Free will is nothing to do with this argument.

Life is about competition. If you are left behind in the technological race, a more powerful civilization will replace your own. I'm not even sure what the Native American's had even counts as civilization, just a culture.

So I wonder now, who is going to push the United States into the dirt?

China? Your pals the globalists made sure China got all of the latest and best manufacturing equipment, well almost all, their spies and Students in USA Universities got all the rest. Bushco is now blowing our economy all to hell and our military is made overseas. China owns quite a bit of our debt and one of these days they are going to collect.

But that's just the way of life.

Speak Chinese?

How about Russian? Better check your military alliances.

Time for the Indians to sue the individual members of Congress. Why should I have to pay? Let the rich Congress critters be accountable for a change.
