While he is no doubt well informed, it could also be said the president Bush also has an agenda and chooses to make statements that may or may not
influence public opinion. Even though governments often have access to many facts that we in the public don't, there is NO guarantee they will
reflect the facts in any statements they make. This whole thread is a classic example of that. Wombat has done a good job of summarising the KNOWN
facts by all, and removing the agenda motivated rhetoric.

The U.S. IN COOPERATION with former soviet states want to build a DEFENSIVE missile system and yet this is justification for a huge country, Russia,
to invade its puny neighbor and threaten to depose its elected government?
Maybe if Putin, hell, if all of Russia didn't act so destructive over the last 90 or so years (ex. Ukrainian Famine), maybe, the former soviet states
wouldn't have the desire to go under NATO.
As for South Ossetia, the Russians have no right to complain about purported civilian casualties caused by those "murderous" Georgian forces and
their 7 combat aircraft because it was the Russians themselves that leveled the hell out of Grozny a few years earlier killing thousands of civilians.

This picture says it all I think! Saakashvili taking cover from an 'unknown' helicopter. On the international stage, this wouldn't fill me with
confidence if this guy was my country's leader.
Russian troops invade Georgia and 'take the town of Gori'
Georgia today claimed that Russian forces had overrun the strategic city of Gori as troops prepared to defend the capital Tbilisi from what one
official called a "total onslaught".
Georgian soldiers fled Gori, 17 miles from the border with rebel South Ossetia, in panic and disarray, clinging to the sides of cars and vehicles as
they sped out of town. A Georgian armoured personnel carrier was in flames on the street, a victim of an apparent sudden rout.

I find many members in this thread claming that Russia always triggered this voilence .....Here is an informative article from one of the most
RAPEuted Western source that clearly states that Russia always wanted peace and cease fire but it was Georgia and the West who didnot allow peace and
cease-fire...
A Russian-drafted UN Security Council statement calling on both Georgia and South Ossetia to renounce the use of force failed to secure British
and US backing.
news.bbc.co.uk...
After all these the west and the US dont have the moral right to appeal for cease fire .
The Brits and the Americans are the biggest hypocrits in world history .

You are right in that general analysis. However my suspicions, and possibly those of the US government, are genuine. If Russian forces have been
massing for months, and if the whole point of this is for Russia to reassert itself on the world arena it is highly unlikely Russia will show
restraint. I truly suspect it will go 'the whole hog', and (politely) spit in the face of the West while it's at it.
RenegedePsycho's latest post about Russian movements tend to confirm their ambitions are not limited. We may well know by this time tomorrow...

This little scrap with Russia and Georgia is IMO just a smoke screen for some thing larger.
As the world is watching Russia and Georgia to see if things are going to get out of control war ships are being deployed.
Smoke and mirrors Keep the sheep looking one way as the wolf comes from behind
Russia will not bend to the USA pointing a finger at them saying you are a bad boy stop it
The only way Russia can stop the USA from installing it's missile defence system is to take control of Georgia and US knows that
This is just my opinion

This is why Russia is really doing this
I for one am still an American and... taking responsability for our actions I think... is a good place to start in remembering what makes us a great
nation
Its a neigbor that needs help. understand, that the US did not start this and that the EU has said nothing, which is what I expected from them. All
everyone seems to say is US this and US that, its not fair. The Eu has to do something. Look who is ahead of the NATO force, its the netherlands?. Not
the US my american friend.
I whole heartedly disagree. The only reason Russia is opposed to a missle defense system is it would help prevent what they are doing now. As a
citizen of this country you would think you would rather see the spread of Democracy instead of the return of a new USSR with Putin as a self
appointed king.
While our ridiculous politicians cannot come up with an energy plan and the EU is suckered into global warming, Russia is buying up and taking all of
the resources it needs to control the world. The EU will know soon enough when all of their energy is controlled by Russia. That is another reason
to support Georgia. Georgia has built a pipeline to compete and Russia cannot stand it. Bombed to hell by now.
What did you think about Russia marking it's territory at the North Pole? The bear is awake again and going to have it's way unless checked
ASAP.
They are going to use the protection of the Russian citizens (that the didn't really want either) to retake Georgia. I just wonder who is next.
They are attacking our ally and we can't turn our back again on someone who needs us. Russia needs to withdraw before they see what real airpower
looks like.

Donald Tusk, Polish PM, issued an immediate response, calling Russia’s statement”irresponsible and aggressive”"

Eh?
Then why would the US be opposed to having similar Russian systems and bombers stationed in Cuba.
They wouldn't like it to say the least, and neither should Russia have to like having missile defense systems in their backyard.

How reliable is that source? Poland and Latvia are asleep at present, and I find it hard to believe such rhetoric would have gone unreported in the
mainstream media. I also find it difficult to imagine Putin being THAT undiplomatic.

True. The ruse of "you can help us build it..." to the Russians did not stand to the laugh test, for Putin has no sense of humor. Rice and Bush
may, by even they are more deliberate than people give them credit for, as does Putin know this. God help us all.

UPDATE
Putin spits back at comedian Bush
Speaking in Moscow, Mr Putin questioned the moral support "some" states were extending to Georgia's leaders, saying they were trying to
"portray victims of aggression as aggressors".
The late Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, he said, had been hanged for "destroying several Shia villages".
But Georgia's current leaders, he alleged, had "razed 10 Ossetian villages at once", killing civilians indiscriminately.
other Updates :
The UN Security Council in New York is discussing a draft resolution on an immediate ceasefire
And French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to hold talks in both Moscow and Georgia on Tuesday.
