Nope, France is actively involved with negotiating a cease fire. Their FM was in Georgia today and Sarkozy will be there tomorrow. Nothing to get
worried about tho.

I can't type fast, but here are some of the U.N. statements live on CNN right now
French Ambassador:
France, as president of the EU, is making maximum effort to try and help find a solution to this situation...
...our president will go to Moscow tomorrow, and thereofre there is maximum 100% mobilization of the French authorities...
our aim is to stop this and put an end ot the violence...
the French president has laid out the elements of a plan to reach a solution. It's a simple plan. It's common sense...
...immediate cessation of hostilities...return of Russian and Georgain forces of the position that they occupied before the outbreak of violence...
respect for sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Georgia...
...this is what we are discussing with both Georgia and Russia. We've had favorable reaction from the Georgian side, and we hope that there will be
equally responsive and favorable reaction from the Russian side.
As far as the security council is concerned, we want it to be part of that effort.
It should operate as a positive contirbutor to the action that we are undertaking.
On a possible U.N. resolution:
It's a very simple and straightforward resolution. It basically contains the very same elements in the plan outlined...
...We don't think the council is a place for confrontation. We want to go beyond that. We want to turn the energy and the weight of the council into
a positive force so that it can help towards a solution.

France is sending Sarkhozy (sp?) tomorrow to Moscow first to try and get the Russians to sign the cease-fire agreement then he will be going to
Georgia.
I think this is the French "action" someone mentioned.
I fully expect for Russia to sign the agreement and to begin pulling their forces out tomorrow. They just wanted to show the world that they could do
what they want when they want and that they could go as far as they want. They have no interest in continuing to push this. their point has been made
and now they can leave and save face and still look like the big bad-@ss who wasnt scared off by the interntaional community.

The U.S. Military could destroy the Russians on the ground so fact and in the air that it wouldn't be funny. Iraq has been the testing ground
between the two nations for the last 15 years and the soviet technology is crap.

The problem with that theory is the belief that the Russians rely solely on soviet technology, and have not made any attempts to do some R&D in the
past decade.
Go look up their newest nuke, it can perform in-flight maneuvers that render missile defense shields completely useless.

The U.S. Ambassador says (live on CNN)
Georgia has signed a statement today that was presented to them by the French and British foreign ministers...
...why is there a continuing assault using a variety of means against Georgia...
we have not received a satisfactory answer to that question. The attacks have continued, intensified, and expanded geographically.
Why? If the Russian intent has been stated to return to a status quo, why start the second front from Abkhazia? Why attack the rest of Georgia? And
why attack the infrastructure of Georgia? Why threaten to attack the civilian attack of Tiblisi.
We believe the time has come for the council to take the necessary action...
...to bring more pressure on Russia, to cease hostilities, to accept what Georgia has accepted.

You can't be serious... I mean, you might be and I respect that, but Russia and the United States have only ever fought proxy wars.
A direct conflict is not an option for both sides. We can beat chests over it and say how great one or the other side is, but that's not how this
problem is going to be solved.

While I have no doubt that US forces could quickly take out Russia's Ground/Air forces; I don't know if Russia would ever bow out.
Would they take it to nukes? If so we all lose. All, not you, not me, not them, us, all.
