The Prime Minister has accused Washington of undermining Russia’s attempts to restore peace in the South Ossetian conflict zone. Vladimir Putin said a decision by the US military to fly 800 Georgian soldiers from Iraq to Georgia showed America was ‘trying to get in the way’.

In a stinging attack on the US, Putin told government ministers : " It’s a pity that some of our partners, instead of helping, are trying to get in the way”.

He said the US was using “its military transport aircraft to relocate Georgia’s military contingent from Iraq virtually into the conflict zone”.

He also voiced his frustration at the inability of Russia’s western partners to adequately assess the situation in South Ossetia.

“I’m amazed by their skills at seeing black as white, of portraying aggressors as victims and of blamimg the real victims for the consequences of the conflict.

Putin also accused the West of double standards when it comes to judging war crimes.

“As we all know, Saddam Hussein was hanged for burning down several Shiite villages. But now suddenly the situation is different. The Georgian leaders who in a matter of hours wiped out ten Ossetian villages, who ran over children and the elderly with tanks, who burned civilians alive, those people have to be protected,” he said.

Not to split hairs here, but Georgia does have a small population of black people who settled there a very long time ago. So who knows.

The Georgian city of Gori -- near the border with flashpoint South Ossetia -- is falling to the Russian military, Georgian officials said Monday. A CNN crew in Gori saw Georgian forces piling into trucks and leaving the city at high speed. The Georgia Interior Ministry also said Zugdidi and Senaki -- towns near the other breakaway region of Abkhazia -- were also now under Russian control.

Turkey and other nations, who want to join the EU, fly the Union flag in order to show their willingness and cooperation. It is interesting that European politicians think Georgia should join NATO and not the EU.

British HM opposition leader, David Cameron, said Georgian membership of NATO should continue but European Union membership wasn't up for discussion.

Surprise surprise, the Russians have increased their attacks to an invasion into Georgia proper. It will be interesting to see what excuse the Russians will come up with next to take control of the whole of Georgia. It's almost laughable now, the Russians in this thread defending the actions of Russia, which is about as far from a democracy as you can get.

Well so far they are only sending humanitarian aid and "political support". Maybe military equipment. They are not planning to send any troops - that's certain.

I'm not sure. Poland has been demanding the EU threatens Russia. The longer the conflict goes on, Eastern Europe might supply troops.

We'll have to wait and see what they will offer Georgia.

Its not completely out of the realm of possibility that this could be what triggers WW3.
Im not a doom sayer or fear monger but I do like history and there have been a lot of wars started over something that began as a regional issue or less.

Im sure I dont have to remind people here about Franz Ferdinand and WW1

The only question is whether Russia is going to be happy installing a puppet or whether they are simply going to annex georgia ala The sudetenland.

It was announced that the 98th Airborne Division is also earmarked for contract manning, and by September 2006, it was confirmed that 95% of the units of the 98th Division had shifted to contract manning.[16]

Unlike western airborne units, which must walk when they arrive at their destination, the VDV divisions are equipped with armoured fighting vehicles, artillery and anti-aircraft guns, trucks and jeeps.[citation needed] Thus VDV units possess superior mobility and firepower with these vehicles. Each division has both regiments equipped with them and their derivatives. (Each division used to have three regiments, but the 106th was the last, and lost its third regiment in 2006.) People of the world. You are deceived! World mass media conduct propagation of a false information. Russia DID NOT ATTACK Georgia! 07.08.2008 at 22:00 Georgia has attacked South Ossetia. At 3:30 08.08.2008 tanks of the Georgian armies have entered into city Tskhinvali. Artillery bombardment all the day long proceeded, fights with use of tanks and heavy combat material, both against ossetic armies, and against peace inhabitants were conducted. 1400 civil people already were lost. The Russian peacemakers have arrived to South Ossetia in the evening 08.08.2008 for settlement of the conflict and prompting of the world in republic and protection of the Russian citizens living on territory of South Ossetia. Georgia has attacked South Ossetia on eve of Olympiad, it is top of cruelty and cynicism. Georgia have proposed 3 unilateral ceasefires and then broken every single one within hours. I personally think that Russia is done trying to talk Georgia into a ceasefire. It seems obvious that the comment about 'taking it to it's logical conclusion' means that Russia believes that only overwhelming force and the destruction of large parts of the geogian groundforce and airforce will persuade Georgia into a lasting ceasefire.

Ah yes breaking the ceasefires. I have heard that it is russia who has been doing that. As well Russian forces are advancing into Georgia, hardly a ceasefire. I think anyone with a working intellignece knows that Russia engineered this ( arming the rebels in Ossetia and encouraging them to wave the red flag in front of Georgia by encouraging them to shell sites in Georgia ). Although people like Maloy gladly forget that the South Ossetians had been shelling Georgia before the Georgians went in there. Come on now wake up.

Bush just spoke. Said Russia must reverse course. The ticker on the bottom of the screen said American efforts to oppose Russia's move may be underway. Whatever that means.

America has watered down its statement at the UN according to the BBC.

UN has agreed with the French three-point plan for the Georgian V Russian war. China is rumoured to be willing to support the statement too, but Russia is expected to veto.
