Industry to begin regulating the "dark side" of the internet

www.infowars.com

The industry must move to regulate the “dark side” of the internet according to a committee of MPs.

t said both adults and children were at risk from harmful content; particularly those specific problems such as eating disorders or who are depressed. It was concerned by what it saw as “shocking” delays” in taking down images of child abuse.

The Committee has called for a 9pm watershed with postings containing sex, bad language or violence to be blocked before this time. It also wants the introduction of a ‘one-click’ facility that will let people report clips and websites containing images of abuse directly to the police.

It wants to see an industry body set up to police social networking websites and adjudicate on complaints. However it short of calling for this to be a statutory body, arguing that its effectiveness would be limited as so many sites are based overseas.

Finally, our beloved government is going to protect us from those "bad sites". I wonder, will infowars.com and ATS qualify as the "dark side" of the internet? Will only "politically correct" sites will remain on the web? And is excercising freedom of speech "politically correct"...?

“We need urgently to find a consensus about the standards of the future, standards to help navigate this vast and rapidly evolving world if we are to protect young people,” said Mr Burnham.

Again, the first incremental step to internet censorship will involve porn, violence, and sex. The second will involve "political correctness"; silencing alternative viewpoints (global warming, anti-semitism, war on terror, mainstream media, etc.)

But then, the government loves you, the government cares for you, the government protects you, there is no conspiracy, go back to sleep.

Yes, we live in a "brave new world" now don't we? I can certainly see how this will be abused to strip people of their easy access to info on the internet. Similar to how the war on drugs and the war on terror have been abused.

It may not happen in the beginning, but I would imagine that ATS would end up on the "dark side" list eventually.

A Big Brother government is virtually impossible with the sheer number of people they are attempting to control, so why bother?

There isnt enough money to do this so it wont happen.
Also people will just change hosts, and the US will lose a ton of hosting business.

Places like myspace should have already moved outside of the country.
Do you really want that many phone calls fromt he cops for info?
It becomes one big pain int he butt.

They may not be able to "regulate" it, but they can monitor it and prosecute anyone who steps out of line. They are already doing this with the P2P crowd. I don't see why that wouldn't translate to a broader audience if they wanted to start cracking down.

Hypothetical nonsense follows:
Deem sites like ATS illegal for Americans to go to. Monitor all IP's that visit the site. Get personal info from ISP's. Fine anyone they catch going there, or disconnect them from the internet like they are trying in Europe.

What did I miss that's going on in Europe?

*sigh* As much as I think porn is bad for soceity, obviously the solution isn't to regulate it. Once something is on 'the list' it only makes people want it more.

You are forgetting that the major providers, ISP's, are huge corporations. Thus, the govt. only needs to gain control of those corporations to gain control of the internet. Plans are already being made to put in the corporate-controlled "Grid". It would be several times faster than broadband, but the only sites one would be allowed to visit would be corporate-controlled "mainstream" sites.

and what about the people who are using compromised computers? what if they have turned joe shmoes PC into a proxy and browse the net with that IP? what if they have a bot visiting random websites in the back round all day while they browse? whats stopping a "child porn gang" from turning thousands of victims into mini-servers where they can store files over various IPs for their friends to download? did they forget there is a McDonalds at every corner with public wifi to do these activities from?

they couldn't stop it OFFLINE before ONLINE was even invented..

there is a story about the original boards being flooded with porn
there wasa huge out cry and calls for regulation
then
it was discovered it was the government doing the flooding to build a pretext for control

take niteflirt for example
principle owner: ATandT
profit gouge on that electronic sex trade?
at times apparantly its a 50 percent pimp fee
