I always thought a "direct order" was a cliche used in Hollywood films. Like the phrase "Sir, with all due respect..."
When I was in BMTS, I recall an airman using the phrase "Sir, with all due respect..." when addressing the team leader, who subsequently reduced the
poor airman to tears when he demanded to know which film the airman learned the phrase from (if I were silly enough to have used the cliche and been
put in that spot by the instructor, I would have answered "all of them, sir."
I'm not taking the micky from you, but if an officer tells an enlisted person to do something, is it ever anything but a "direct" order?
As for the OP's story, yeah. It's a cool story, but the story's probably died a still-birth. It's not as if anyone can insist on seeing an
evidence, unfortunately.
