I post in 2 other forums, and 1 of them i rarely go to.

In the other one it is a small community of mostly locals, or ex-locals. There are many who were in the area in the past that stumbled into the forum while looking up info on their old home areas. One of these people is called "Peter Brit".

Peter Brit is a 41 year old British soldier in command of a group in Afghanistan. He drops by on occassion to say "Hi" (he obviously doesn't post as much as he did before he was deployed). When it has been awhile, we all start to worry about him, honestly.

Today he dropped by and gave us a couple of postings. One of them in particular was very good, and thought i would share:

Hi All
I know i have been away for a little while and not posted much but i have looked in from time to time and picked up PMs from various people wishing me well, so i whilst i have a couple of days rest i thought i would drop in.

Things have been a bit rough here this past week and i aint complaining i didnt expect an easy ride when i signed up for this tour at 41yrs of age, it is something i wanted to do.

I have this past 2 days been getting plenty of fluid in me due to keeling over with heat exhaustion spending the first day on an IV, those medics sure did have a good dig around my arm before getting it right....they caused that much damage getting a Line in perhaps i should ask for a purple heart...

My exhaustion came after being held up for 3 days with very little water in a compound we had took refuge in, the place was one hot zone, the reason i am telling this story is because in all the mayhem that was going on i had to give orders i thought i would never give, it seemed we was about to be over run and i gave the order to fix bayonets, after a clattering of bayonets being fixed a young soldier shouted out "Long live Texas, remember the Alamo" followed by a cheer from the rest of my company. Looking around the compound at our make shift fortifications i did get a sense of what he meant. I later spoke to the young soldier who told me, he had seen the film before coming out here and just felt he would use the words as a battle cry. Well what he said did the trick because we raised our game and that compund is still in British hands, we are now having a few days rest so i will be around a little bit more.

Once again thanks for all the support..

This may belong in BTS...but i rarely go there and am more familiar with ATS.

He went on to say that the war in Afghanistan is heating up again, but that the area is still better than is reported.

if he think's he's in Afghanistan for a good reason, remember it was the yank's who funded and created "al-cia-da

So what has that got to do with the fact that the Taliban was harboring and helping other extremist groups preform acts of terrorism? This has nothing to do with the fact that the CIA was involved at one point or another in the formation of Al Quida. The fact is the Taliban harbored terrorists and help train them. For doing this you get a military response. And I suppose that your going to cry about the fact that the Taliban had also been given the grand tour of Washington by the government too.

Don't take it out on the soldier doing he or her job, he/she doesn't have a choice most of the time. Go complain to the government, I am sure they will be happy to hear your point of view.

this is not a political thread, Pockets. That is what i am saying. Go elsewhere. I am more concerned with the humanistic and existential side of this.

I am completely disinterested in how you or any others feel about the war in this context. Please stay on topic.

Was he one of the weekend warriors signing on for this tour at the age of 41,and something he wanted to do!

The mans clearly not right in the head,Going to afganistan to fight rock hard fighters like tha taliban is never going to be easy.and its something he wanted to do?Freedom isnt free!lol love that BS sprayed here so many times

I dont even thing this war is legal like Iraq isnt, the more one looks at 9/11 the more dodgy afganistan looks. The taliban told the worlds media they would only give up Bin Laden if they were showed proof he was involved in the dispicable twin towers bloodbath, they were never shown the proof and the war machine rolled over their AK47's,sandles and pick up trucks.
Having fought the Russians for so long they knew they had to regroup in the mountains and hit back when ever they can

Our boys out there are having a bad time, the weather is a killer let alone the locals.A friends cousin is out there and was delayed coming back due to pick up problems.I feel sorry for them, but they signed up as they think its macho to wear the uniform.lol

Is pete going to cave my head in too?Perhaps i should sing god save the queen while he trys it.lol.I live right on Salisbury plain, the army trains there all the time, they walk around in their uniforms on the streets here

Afganistan is another war we are going to loose,we might have better harware and training but theres no way we can beat them with their tactics used.

I agree with Pockets here Look out for Pete mate

So if we haven't served we don't have a say, that is a very bad attitude and why I and many other's hate squadies, self loving short sighted brain washed islamaphobe's

You missed the whole point. Until you have served and been on the battlefield, you have no right to point a finger at your fellow countrymen doing a job they were sent to do. It matters not wether you agree with the conflict or not when it comes to the soldier doing his/her job.

Personally I do not agree with the conflict but I am not going to condemn a soldier for doing his/her job no matter if they be from the UK, US or UN. They were sent and believe me I didn't care if a fellow soldier yelled GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!!!! and the day was ours because of it. You might do well to inform yourself on what it means to be a band of brothers.

God bless that young soldier for yelling "Long live Texas, remember the Alamo" because of it the day was theirs.

i have never served. i have my own reasons, but i didn't serve, nor did my wife.

even so, i respect what a soldier does for us. some of the reasons for this are the sacrifice they are making, whether it is just or not. I am moved by the fact that these men and women would put their lives on the line for what they believe are good reasons, facing a threat they believe in. They do this for me and my children. Complete strangers.

I respect things like honor. Integrity. Ethics. Duty. I live these traits as best i can every day in my life at work and at home. I also believe strongly in fidelity, but that is not for a discussion about soldiers. These traits are what i respect in men and women. Regardless of profession. This is why i respect a soldier. Sure, there are some bad ones. It is just like society. But i do not judge the entire profession on the VERY small percentage of "bad 'soldiers.

You are more than welcome to not like the war. I can't say that i blame you, regardless of whether i agree or not. But this thread is not about the war. It is about a man who is in another country doing what he feels is right, and trying to protect you and I. Complete strangers. He is trying to protect the people of Afghanistan. More complete strangers. And he is having a tough go at it, to be honest.

It is also a story about how this British man, through his participation in a small west texas forum, has been able to connect with Texas to the point that he found the "Remember the Alamo" battle cry significant.

Like i said. This is not a political thread. It is about humanity and existentialism in the current war effort. PLEASE STAY ON TOPIC

Well said, there are none of those "Hollywood" moments "tell my wife/mom/dad I love them and God bless America / Queen". Its about you, your fellow soldier and the enemy. Surreal as it is happening and in the end all you got is the living and the dead. Right or wrong it sucks and sucks hard.

We have here a 41 year old soldier taking the time to share what happened to him and his fellow soldiers on one day in a country far away. It is hoped and wished that we all could send him and his fellow brothers a hearty God bless and come home safely.
