From a British soldier in Afghanistan - REMEMBER THE ALAMO!!!

<<  1    2    3    4  >>

Topic started on 1-8-2008 @ 11:22 PM by bigfatfurrytexan

I post in 2 other forums, and 1 of them i rarely go to.

In the other one it is a small community of mostly locals, or ex-locals. There are many who were in the area in the past that stumbled into the forum while looking up info on their old home areas. One of these people is called "Peter Brit".

Peter Brit is a 41 year old British soldier in command of a group in Afghanistan. He drops by on occassion to say "Hi" (he obviously doesn't post as much as he did before he was deployed). When it has been awhile, we all start to worry about him, honestly.

Today he dropped by and gave us a couple of postings. One of them in particular was very good, and thought i would share:

Hi All
I know i have been away for a little while and not posted much but i have looked in from time to time and picked up PMs from various people wishing me well, so i whilst i have a couple of days rest i thought i would drop in.

Things have been a bit rough here this past week and i aint complaining i didnt expect an easy ride when i signed up for this tour at 41yrs of age, it is something i wanted to do.

I have this past 2 days been getting plenty of fluid in me due to keeling over with heat exhaustion spending the first day on an IV, those medics sure did have a good dig around my arm before getting it right....they caused that much damage getting a Line in perhaps i should ask for a purple heart...

My exhaustion came after being held up for 3 days with very little water in a compound we had took refuge in, the place was one hot zone, the reason i am telling this story is because in all the mayhem that was going on i had to give orders i thought i would never give, it seemed we was about to be over run and i gave the order to fix bayonets, after a clattering of bayonets being fixed a young soldier shouted out "Long live Texas, remember the Alamo" followed by a cheer from the rest of my company. Looking around the compound at our make shift fortifications i did get a sense of what he meant. I later spoke to the young soldier who told me, he had seen the film before coming out here and just felt he would use the words as a battle cry. Well what he said did the trick because we raised our game and that compund is still in British hands, we are now having a few days rest so i will be around a little bit more.

Once again thanks for all the support..

This may belong in BTS...but i rarely go there and am more familiar with ATS.

He went on to say that the war in Afghanistan is heating up again, but that the area is still better than is reported.

I can't believe that these guys are being pinned down is some village for three days without water! Much less having to fix bayonets Where the heck was the back up? Very scary... these guys are such heros in my eyes!

Thank you for sharing that, and for the big smile on my face while reading his words. May God Bless him, and keep him in His care till he is home again.

You should ask him how he feels fighting an unjust war and leaving his loved ones to go kill the cave men, you should also TELL him to read Zbigniew Brzezinski The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy And Its Geostrategic Imperatives, then tell him to get back to you and see if he think's he's in Afghanistan for a good reason, remember it was the yank's who funded and created "al-cia-da"

I am sure that the Brits there understood what that meant. That young soldier was not going to surrender, if need be he would die fighting. May God bless them and keep them and bring them home safely to their families.

Freedom sir is NOT FREE. Without these men, you wouldn't even be allowed to write your hate or live in the 21st century for that matter.

Have some respect.

The Canadians take the brunt in Afghanistan being in the south
But we will not waiver our resolve.

Unlike Iraq the illegitimate war,Afghanistan had training bases for a terrorist organization .As such it was a haven for extremists.
It makes no Difference that it was the CIA who installed them and invented
al-CIA-da ,the fact remains the govt harbored them.

IF it gets any worse we will send the Queens regiment we will Prevail.

Pakistan is the next stop for they too are harboring extremists .

Does anyone know when we will be entering Israel and America to clean out the extremists there ?

If i were less of a man i would. But i will leave that up to you. It might be fun to have your head split open by a 41 year old Brit while he sings "God save the queen". I certainly doubt he would appreciate me asking that question.

Perhaps you should run along and let us grown ups talk. I would rather not see any bickering in my threads. Peddle your hate elsewhere.

So what has that got to do with the fact that the Taliban was harboring and helping other extremist groups preform acts of terrorism? This has nothing to do with the fact that the CIA was involved at one point or another in the formation of Al Quida. The fact is the Taliban harbored terrorists and help train them. For doing this you get a military response. And I suppose that your going to cry about the fact that the Taliban had also been given the grand tour of Washington by the government too.

Don't take it out on the soldier doing he or her job, he/she doesn't have a choice most of the time. Go complain to the government, I am sure they will be happy to hear your point of view.

this is not a political thread, Pockets. That is what i am saying. Go elsewhere. I am more concerned with the humanistic and existential side of this.

I am completely disinterested in how you or any others feel about the war in this context. Please stay on topic.

Was he one of the weekend warriors signing on for this tour at the age of 41,and something he wanted to do!

The mans clearly not right in the head,Going to afganistan to fight rock hard fighters like tha taliban is never going to be easy.and its something he wanted to do?Freedom isnt free!lol love that BS sprayed here so many times

I dont even thing this war is legal like Iraq isnt, the more one looks at 9/11 the more dodgy afganistan looks. The taliban told the worlds media they would only give up Bin Laden if they were showed proof he was involved in the dispicable twin towers bloodbath, they were never shown the proof and the war machine rolled over their AK47's,sandles and pick up trucks.
Having fought the Russians for so long they knew they had to regroup in the mountains and hit back when ever they can

Our boys out there are having a bad time, the weather is a killer let alone the locals.A friends cousin is out there and was delayed coming back due to pick up problems.I feel sorry for them, but they signed up as they think its macho to wear the uniform.lol

Is pete going to cave my head in too?Perhaps i should sing god save the queen while he trys it.lol.I live right on Salisbury plain, the army trains there all the time, they walk around in their uniforms on the streets here

Afganistan is another war we are going to loose,we might have better harware and training but theres no way we can beat them with their tactics used.

I agree with Pockets here Look out for Pete mate

Just one simple question to noangels and pockets; has either one of you ever served in the military? If not please spread your drivel elsewhere, you hold no weight with me or anyone else that has.

You missed the whole point. Until you have served and been on the battlefield, you have no right to point a finger at your fellow countrymen doing a job they were sent to do. It matters not wether you agree with the conflict or not when it comes to the soldier doing his/her job.

Personally I do not agree with the conflict but I am not going to condemn a soldier for doing his/her job no matter if they be from the UK, US or UN. They were sent and believe me I didn't care if a fellow soldier yelled GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!!!! and the day was ours because of it. You might do well to inform yourself on what it means to be a band of brothers.

God bless that young soldier for yelling "Long live Texas, remember the Alamo" because of it the day was theirs.

I want to know how I am hate peddling and or attacking this soldier, I am pointing no fingers all I suggested was that the guy read a book and see if it changes his point of view, he may have to fight, but he doesn't have to like it, once again pstrron your post is nothing but you arguing points you seem to have made up in your head

i have never served. i have my own reasons, but i didn't serve, nor did my wife.

even so, i respect what a soldier does for us. some of the reasons for this are the sacrifice they are making, whether it is just or not. I am moved by the fact that these men and women would put their lives on the line for what they believe are good reasons, facing a threat they believe in. They do this for me and my children. Complete strangers.

I respect things like honor. Integrity. Ethics. Duty. I live these traits as best i can every day in my life at work and at home. I also believe strongly in fidelity, but that is not for a discussion about soldiers. These traits are what i respect in men and women. Regardless of profession. This is why i respect a soldier. Sure, there are some bad ones. It is just like society. But i do not judge the entire profession on the VERY small percentage of "bad 'soldiers.

You are more than welcome to not like the war. I can't say that i blame you, regardless of whether i agree or not. But this thread is not about the war. It is about a man who is in another country doing what he feels is right, and trying to protect you and I. Complete strangers. He is trying to protect the people of Afghanistan. More complete strangers. And he is having a tough go at it, to be honest.

It is also a story about how this British man, through his participation in a small west texas forum, has been able to connect with Texas to the point that he found the "Remember the Alamo" battle cry significant.

Like i said. This is not a political thread. It is about humanity and existentialism in the current war effort. PLEASE STAY ON TOPIC

As a ex British Soldier i can tell you that NO soldier fights for the Queen. Each and every individual Soldier fights for each other. Its a brotherhood of men and they fight to protect one another. Hence the whole reason for this thread to show the humour, dignity and love between these soldiers on the battlefield. Nothing to do with the Taliban or the Queen just a few surreal moments on the battlefield where one Soldier realised his pride in his men for being so brave far outweighed any war.

It's hard to stay on topic when your being attacked and told you have no say, not that I was on topic in the first place, bigfatfurrytexan I am sorry for de-railing this thread, this is a nice story to hear from a battlefield many miles from all our home's, maybe you should be singling other's out aswell, I think you may have missed something that was also off topic

Well said, there are none of those "Hollywood" moments "tell my wife/mom/dad I love them and God bless America / Queen". Its about you, your fellow soldier and the enemy. Surreal as it is happening and in the end all you got is the living and the dead. Right or wrong it sucks and sucks hard.

We have here a 41 year old soldier taking the time to share what happened to him and his fellow soldiers on one day in a country far away. It is hoped and wished that we all could send him and his fellow brothers a hearty God bless and come home safely.

Good story... These guys are just doing their job, no need for hate here, if you want political talk ...I agree, go elsewhere.

These guys are a lot braver than me and its good to hear stories like these to remind us what we have while we go about our comfortable lives.
