so you've expierienced the following: racial profiling, being overly observed in stores, getting pulled over for driving a nice car, and witnessing a look of bewilderment and awe on white ppl's faces due to the fact you don't use slang words and have a big vocab?

all that comes with the territory of being black.

[edit on 1-8-2008 by LordInfamous]

Get over yourself!

You are racial profiling me right now, assuming that my life is somehow easier than your's because I'm white.

I was a teenager once too you know. I've been watched in stores, been accused of stealing, had my bags checked, been kicked out of nice restaurants. I've been harassed by police, I've been convicted because I was racially profiled. But that's another thread, and too much controversy for ATS.

I'm a very smart person, and I've been hit with looks of awe and bewilderment constantly because I come out with stuff that people don't expect just by looking at me.

I think the territory you're talking about is quite different than you think and you are confused because the dead civil right's movement has brainwashed you.

The truth is, every young person experiences these things. I haven't seen you write anything at all that I haven't experienced numerous times in my own life.

Does that mean I'm black?

Not all "white folks" are born with silver spoons in their mouths. Many struggle , sometimes even more.

being black is accompanied with a HELL of a lot more struggle than being white.

How does it serve you to believe that?

yes i did..and imo my response on page number 2 is the perfect response to your post.

btw i feel that the "race card" term was created to ignore or trivialize situations of racism.

*sigh* It makes me sad that you are so jaded.

I feel bad if what you say is true. However, I do believe you are exaggerating on a big scale.

My roomates have told me, that in and near the city of Philly, they have had no problem getting jobs, and on average, they thought their "blackness" suited them in a favorable manner.

All people have A LOT to go through. I think maybe you are misplacing your anger. If you are experiencing problems, then I suggest moving from podunk.

As if people were TRYING to make it hard on you. I just think this is an over-represented load of bull. I hired many more black people than I did white people, and the job-retension depended on their ability to perform.

You act as if black history month is YOURS. No, I think the history is wrought with sad sad incidences. I feel bad for your ancestors, but not for you. You have all the oportunity in the world.

I apply to so many jobs. I bet (relative to the population) that as many black get hired as me.

I now think this thread was started on a bait for a negative response, at which point you could perpetuate your silly excuse.

it's not. black folks know this. whites however, simply just won't ever be able to understand. which in all honesty, is fine with me.

I am sincerely glad that you have found your way to deal with it.. However...

You're not the only black person in the world. Others may share different opinions.. And I assure you they do.

It seems you must live in an area that is absolutely devoid of any racial conversation.

Edit: Your mirror is coming. I don't think you've done more than challenge me, and in a good way. I appreciate the discussion.

Ok... deal...

Other then to quible on the heriditay of Hannibal, and or carthage, i get your point

As an objective viewer, can you not see a problem with a country creating a designated Month to Honor a Certain Race?

Doesnt that set a dangeruous Precident?

I know what your saying, there are MANY great African-People throughout history, Everyone Knows who the the other Gerorge Washington is.... Personaly, ive studied MUCH of the miliraty campain, and the life of Hannibal, but, i dont think that such tales should be lumped together as 'black history'

Hannible is from the archives of History, near pre-history, before the dawn of the Romans.

Geroge Washington Carver is an American Inventor. Thats all.

I couldnt tell you a thing about maya angelou, other then i heard the name before during high school, same with edgar allen poe... im not a litiuture person....

Diffrent people, over the course of time, have adapted to thier surroundings...

The continent of Africa, haveing an ABUNDENCE of ALL natural resources, never faced the struggles that lead to innovation. Thus, as a PEOPLE, they became Specialised to certain traits.

ALL PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS.

This is still going on today.

Over the last few hundred years, the world is changeing, regions that were stuck in the past, are being modernized, and these regions are adapting, some better then others.

If you want to get into Generalizations, we can go there, but with the last few hundred years, the mixing of the worlds has changed the face of the populations...

Black history month? Sheesh this is Atlanta, everyday is black history day! What gets on my nerves is that very often when a program is about a historically significant white individual they will often use a black commentator. It is almost as if they want to apologize for focusing on white history so they try to even it out. I do not know who produces those shows, probably PBS, but it is obvious and annoying.

Now if they produced real and factual programs about black history in Sub-Saharan Africa, if they focused on the reality of disease, slavery, cannibalism, starvation, etc....in the “motherland” without spinning the facts that would be fascinating to watch.
