Olympic panel ends ban, says Iraq can go to games

sports.yahoo.com

A compromise was worked out after mediators from Germany and China became involved in talks.

Iraq is expected to send two athletes to Beijing. Five other hopefuls in archery, judo, rowing and weightlifting lost their chance to compete when a deadline to select teams for other sports passed with no break in the stalemate.

So 2 outta 5 and not a chance in hell to win a medal but not bad.
At least Iraq will be allowed to "show up"...

What it doesn't say is that the American athletes will also be representing Iraq, so we will liberate them from their medal-less fate!

Good for Iraq...

I hope that they get at least a medal...

That would be cool...

I remember watching a documentary on Iraq and it happened to interview some Marines in the middle of a soccer game with a local Iraqi under-18 club.

The kids whooped the Marines, 7-1... lol

Perhaps there's untapped potential after all...
Or Americans are just hopeless at soccer, most likely the case.

Anyway just thought I'd share that marginally related story.
