Emo To Be Made Illegal In Russia?

www.punkbands.com

A new Russian law could make being an emo kid illegal in the eastern European country. Legislation is currenting being formulated in Russia to heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.

I don't know whether i should feel amused or a little worried...

Anyways, my question to you is why does the emo current generate so much hate all around the world? A while ago there were street riots against emos in Mexico!

Why do people feel so threatened by a bunch of depressed teenagers? Seems a little exaggerated to me...

Thoughts, anyone?

I'm not emo, but I do kind of identify with the goth culture a little. This seems really silly. Isn't this discrimination? Do they have any anti-discrimination laws that will protect these kids in Russia?

It's weird, it's not as if they're hurting anyone. But I guess it's because people are scared of any one or thing that's different?

In the article it mentions that the "banning" of people being emo is because there are fears that it encourages depression and suicide. But that's not true. If anything, it helps those who are feeling depressed and suicidal to get their feelings out and not feel so alone. Imo, it's a very genuine sub-culture and so is the gothic one. From what I know, it's about expressing your feelings, and since when is that a bad thing?

People always try to get rid of what they don't understand. Anyway, that's my take on it. Hopefully they don't follow through, because I don't think it would be a good move to "ban" people from being emo. This is just ridiculous lol, I mean come on..

I guess people just don't like being depressed just because someone else is, and wants you to feel their pain.

... I had to laugh though...

"My government just doesn't get me! I'm gonna go wallow in eternal sadness."

"Why should you be so happy, when my government hates me..."

I don't know what to make of this.
Yes, it does trample on the freedoms of the citizens, so morally, I have to object.

... but I can't help the fact that it's so damn funny.

I have to admit i find it a little funny too, but this i found a little worrying. Is that some sort of modern witch hunt?

I guess people dislike them because they're a little different, but why in the world would you feel threatened by a depressed teenager?

Edited grammar.

I think that the most offensive thing in the article is saying that My Chemical Romance is Emo. They're not Emo, they just suck and whine a lot. I kid, kind of. Saves the Day though, that's emo. But seriously, just leave the poor depressed teenagers alone. Now they actually have a reason to be depressed, so Russia's just fueling the fire. Ridiculous.

Emo.

One day last year the son of some friends that I hadn't seen for awhile showed up at a family get together with long hair combed over his face and down past his chin so you couldn't even see his face. Of course everyone asked what's up with this kid. The answer from other kids there: he's an "emo".

Of course, the real answer is that he was just one more screwed up teenager who would do anything to get some attention.

Emo - schemo, it's just BS in reality.

I heard about the emo bashing in Mexico too. It's such a shame that people can't accept others who are different you know? I mean you don't have to agree with what people do, but you can at least agree to disagree right?

What's sad is that these kids are just being who they are and they're getting persecuted for it!

Wish there was more understanding in the world. Kids are the future, and if this is what the future is going to be, well then I hope I can go to another planet instead. It just sucks that there can be so much hatred, to the point of wishing that a whole group of people would just die. So sad...

dragonfire2159, yeah MCR aren't emo. It's funny, there are a lot of bands labeled emo, which aren't lol. For some reason, my cousin labeled me emo because I was listening to metal music! Lol metal and emo music are as far apart as you could get..

Except that this whole "emo" thing is manufactured. These people are no different than any screwed up kids that came before them. The only new thing is that instead of trying to overcome their issues and become a productive member of society, they are using this to wallow in their self pity and beg for a free ride.

No, see I don't agree. They're not looking for a free ride. They're just looking to be understood. I mean, there's so much violence and uncertainty in the world now more than ever, it's not hard to understand that there would be people who have a hard time coping and need a shoulder, you know?

Now that IS scary. An organised mob beating up 3 teenagers just because of how they look and the music they listen too. That video is horrific!

Every single person on this earth should be able to wear whatever clothes they want and listen to any kind of music they want. The fact they're emo is just an excuse. An excuse for directing hate at someone.

I find it strange how we all want freedom in this world, but some people think that gives them the freedom to control other people's freedoms. It's a messed up world.

I'll phrase it a different way for you. What's different now, than in the past? Some people always have had these same issues. These kids are just trying to get attention, or cash in on it. Doesn't help when advertisers sniff out a possible new niche market to exploit either.

Okay, some of the replies on the thread left me as puzzled as before.

While not being an emo myself (i'm waaaay to old for that, plus i find it too difficult to be depressed all the time ), i can't help but to feel sympathetic about kids that are just at a very sensitive age, and who, besides having a lot of problems that come with the age (you remember being a teenager, right? It wasn't all thaaat simple), also have to deal with a lot of prejudice, mockery and apparently hate.

How in the world does it help a confused and suicidal teenager if you forbid him/her to express him/herself in the only way they can, oooor, worse, beat the crap out of them?

Oh and why the hate, people, why the hate? I can understand the mockery, but the hate?

I most definitely agree. It's an excuse and a pretty lame one at that I mean come on...

How on earth can we ever achieve world peace if all we ever do is hate on each other? No wonder advanced extraterrestrial civilisations wouldn't want anything to do with us. We can never work out our differences.

Emo and Goth are not the same thing. They both share similar styles of clothing, and some trends, but it's a different culture.

I can see how this law will keep those kids from being threatened, but then the law would have to be made to make everyone dress the same, so that no other group is ridiculed.

One word to all people who critisise emo / goth culture:

PATHETIC.

It really frustrates me when people attack (quite literally in some cases) people who are dressed as emo or goth. I listen to heavy rock / post hardcore alternative rock, i cause NOBODY any harm.

Should rap culture not be made illegal instead?? How many 'emo' bands do you see encouraging involvement with gangs, taking drugs, carrying knives / guns?? I would estimate that 90% of all crime is committed by 'wannabe rap ganstas' trying to emulate what their heros rap about. If anything, more needs to be done to kerb this putrification and dumbing down of the younger generation.

Typically, people who listen to Rap / hip slop whatever, are more likely to be unemployed, have no concept of how to communicate effectively, more likely to commit crimes / take drugs / assault or abuse other people and are generally more likely to cause social problems by hanging around in gangs.

There is NO valid reason to discriminate in a way such as this.

emo isnt a culture, some moody little kid with a purple t shirt whinging because he's only got 2 meg broadband, by outlawing it they are making it into something more than it is, a fashion statement no different to mods and rockers, punks and new romantics. You gotta love kids and their real world problems that nobody can understand

I agree that some people have always had the same issues. But the times have changed, they've become more complicated. And so modern kids have come up with new ways to cope.

And yes, a lot of kids do try to get attention, is that a bad thing? Especially if their parents, society ignore them?

Some might be trying to cash in on it, but they would be the posers. Not the actual kids of which emo is a way to express themselves and feel apart of something.

I'd say the difference now from before is that because of technology, there isn't as much of a strong sense of community anymore. We're all together physically, but apart emotionally. In times before these, there were more people talking to each other. These days yes, we still talk to each other, but not really talk to each other. I think that's one of the main underlying issues that emo kids have - and all of us at some point - which is communication.
