Only a fool or someone with a deathwish would underestimate the Russians. They are very powerful and neck and neck with us in many ways. Recall, they also have access to Chinese materials.

Really pretty scary. Now they have updated economic tools. We better school up and get inventive, post haste.

Coming from the guy who thinks they're a bunch of old-school thugs who still hate the West, lost the Cold war and are inferior to Western technology?

Pick a stance and stay with it would you?

Face facts, as much as you can't stand hearing, Russia has every right to respond to Western aggression. And the West are the aggressors here.

They want to box in their Nuclear offensive capabilities so their useless.
How do you think America would respond if Russian puts up a missile shield in China and across the Eastern seaboard?

America would go into panic mode just like Russia is doing.
Fair is fair, the US wants to play hardball and Russia is game.

I've noticed that a lot of people have been saying that those Russian "rustbuckets" could never make it to American soil. Well, did anyone stop to think that those Russian "rustbuckets" would probably have hordes of fighters as escorts. Our B-52's are "rustbuckets" in the same since that they are an older design. The truth is that if they do get somewhere then they will destroy something. There are also plenty of targets in the Gulf of Mexico that would seriously retard the US, which could never be protected in time if there were a surprise attack. We need radar, anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, and anti-missile capabilities secretly installed on most US oil rigs immediately+ the 5th fleet. DO YOU HEAR THAT NSA SNOOPS WATCHING THIS SITE...PASS IT ALONG AND SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES?

As to another posters comment. Yes the pieces are being placed for WWIII, and no the US is not the only aggressor out there. The Chinese and Russians are SECRETLY building their armies to attack. The Chinese and Russians recently signed a pact to say that their borders were clearly defined so they could sorta symbolically trust each other to be allies and prevent backstabbing. Bush is provoking this attack sooner rather than later because given time they will overpower the US if they continue building secret war capabilities. When Bush attacks Iran, it will cause the Russians and Chinese to move their timetable up before they are fully ready for their secret attack which had probably planned for around 2010. Iran provides too much fuel to China, which will cause the Chinese to spring into action. The Europeans, Australia, India, and others all know about the secret plans...as plans are never kept in secret for long...and obviously are not complaining....even helping the Bush administration. Imagine the uproar if all the allies suddenly said we know you're going to attack us....they would say no were not...you suck...we'd say "no you suck more"....and there it would go right there back and forth until war actually did break out.

They will place warplanes and armies secretly in places where they can gain control of oil assets(Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Pakistan,Cuba, Panama Canal), thus chocking the US and Europe of the necessary fuel to fight them. At least that is what I surmise is their expediant plan. Watch in the news for signs this is happening. Have fun all.

After the Plan México which is a Plan Colombia with a different title, I would happily accept Russian is Mexican soil.

I haven´t seen Russians killing and maiming other people´s countries like I have seen America do so many times.

Americans are welcome to my country, but NOT their exploitation agents, their military, their politicians, or their mercenaries.

As if the Ango civilization had ever had any love for anyone besides themselves. And even then the "Anglo" civilization has fought amongst each other throughout history. Anyone who expects a Russian president to be enchanted with America and suck up to it is as misguided as someone who expects an American president to act the same towards Russia. If everyone who favors their nation over others is an ass, then asses we shall all be.

Russian has been menacing the Georgians for 60 some years.

Georgians fit into this how?

Soviet Union not Russia was menacing Georgians for some 60 years, as well as menacing Russians, Ukrainians, Azerbaijanis, Armenians, Polish, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, and many more peoples. And the biggest menaces of all were a pair of Georgians under whom the entire Soviet Union was on its knees and suffering.

Right - all of Russians live in Gulags and pray to Putin 10 times a day.

yet they have killed people just for wanting distinct Georgian Independance

There were people killed by others for wanting independence since history was written, in virtually every part of the world. Name one sizeable country that has never spilled blood as a result of territorial ambitions or independence and revolution struggles. Georgians are just like everyone else, in that they were screwed and screwed others throughout history.

Really? And here I thought that it was a matter of fact that Georgia became part of Soviet Union in 1921, and fought Nazi Germany as part of Soviet Union. Perhaps you got Georgia and some other Eastern European country confused.

Even more fascinating. Russians are interfering in the Balkans in what way exactly? And here it seemed that U.S. and NATO were interefering in the Balkans since the late 90's as a direct move to limit Russia's historical ties to the region.

The Russians fear the Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO.

No more than Ukraine fears to freeze in the winter when Russia shuts of the valves due to Ukraine's nonpayment of energy bills for the last decade. And no more than Georgia fears of losing Abkhazia and South Ossetia to separatists.

They still want to spread "russianism" through Europe and the world.

Seriously fascinating stuff. What is russianism? Is that like Nazism only instead of hating Jews they are propagating love of vodka and wrestling polar bears? Whatever it is russianism sounds like some kind of a fashion fad. Americanism must seriously be losing ground if russianism is finding ways to trinkle in.

Probably for the same reason we want to put Starbucks in Nepal or wherever.

Ah so russianism is some alternative to capitalism now. Russian vodka is on sale in virtually every country in the world - including Nepal - so I guess russianism won.

Lets see - Stolychnaya or Starbucks. Hard choice. Maybe you can have both - a chai latte with a shot of vodka.

I know, but our quality design and products will win all these struggles in the end.

So thought GM and Ford untill Japanism invaded the automotive industry causing massive money hemorrhage for companies believed to be on top of the world.

How do capitalism and world markets bear any relating to vague propasals of Russia's military assets being stationed in Cuba?

Oh my - it is going to be tough to beat Michael Jackson. No one in Russia can possibly match the world wide fame or admiration of MJ. MJ should be America's ambassador to the world.

An atomic bomb, a refrigerated truck and Dave Chapelle are all you need to rule the world. Well ok - maybe a refrigerated truck and atomic bomb are overkill. Dave Chapelle can do it alone.

And Americans buy and appreciate German, Italian, and Chinese brands. Those traitors... Moreover Americans buy and appreciate Russian mail order brides. Hmm - a McDonald big mac or a Russian mail order bride. It's gonna be a tough fight.

If there is one thing American that scares everyone in the world its your ideas. They spread like locusts and wild fire, and once they are embedded into people's heads no amount of brainwashing will get them out.

Excellent points mate

Too many people here are still living in the Cold War mentally and still have that paranoia and misconception about the East.

Everyone thinks the Russians are still aggressive bears who want to spread their "dominos" across the world, and incite revolutions.

The only one I see doing that nowadays is the US. In my opinion America has now surpassed the evils of the Soviets during the Cold War.
They've simply replaced them.

Well done mate.

Very good answers to a narrow minded post. Some people really ought to get out more and taste the 'real world', not whats fed them on their TV sets. How America sees the world, by the most insular nation on this planet except North Korea.

People are people no matter where they are in the world. You'll find that citizens of every nation have their own misconceptions about the rest of the world, it's not just in America.

But moving back to the idea of Russia placing strategic bombers in Latin America and North Africa. Under most circumstances I'd say Russia has the right to do so as long as the nations they base them in consent to such a thing. What I don't like is Russia using a defensive system of limited capability to justify such things.

If we were putting up thousands of interceptors around Russia I'd understand. But putting in offensive weapons over ten interceptors of questionable reliability? That's like pointing a gun at someone because of a Kevlar vest. As it's been said, the interceptors pose no threat to Russia at all unless the Russian nuclear arsenal has magically been reduced to near nothing.

There's ten missiles which I've been told are fired in pairs. Gives us the capability to take down five missiles. Even if we fire each missile individually at separate missiles with one hundred percent accuracy we're still looking at a mere ten missiles. Even if they were MIRV equipped missiles with ten warheads each we're looking at one hundred warheads as opposed to an estimated six thousand warheads. Even if we were to shoot down ten missiles in Eastern Europe and perhaps another ten in Alaska we'd still be completely unable to prevent the Russians from unleashing a nuclear holocaust if they so chose to whether it be a first strike or in retaliation.

Now if Russia were to deploy its own missile shield instead of strategic bombers I think that would work out much better for both sides.

Those Russian bombers are still potent if antiquated. If you get them where you need them there is absolutely no stopping them. I wonder if Cuba has airfields long enough to support them. I can believe many other places with more hospitable runways would be easy to base them off of...I imagine many of their larger bombers can operate off of improved grass strips as well.

I just found out that Cuba has massive runways after a little research.
