Alexander Lavrynov, a spacecraft designer, said he has patented a device for putting advertising into space that would be seen from Earth, Interfax news agency reported Wednesday.

www.cnn.com...

Man that is ridiculous! We have commercials before movie previews and now we will have them in Space. I feel space should not have anything like that in space. No weapons either unless they are for asteroids.

That's taking advertising... a bit too far, in my opinion.

i will go and personally go and kick this guy's ass. light pollution has already screwed with my precious skies enough!!

of course, asimov did write something like this in his story "buy jupiter." isn't it strange how science fiction sometimes comes true like that?

EDIT: after just reading the article now i'd like to know how they would do join the big dipper (not a constellation! HAH!), andromeda, and orion all together, since they don't touch each other in any way.

yes, i know they were using a figure of speach... i hope to god this doesn't happen though. something tells me people won't stand for it. people love the stars too much.

As if we weren't bombarded with commercialism enough, some turd has to think of this. But it was bound to happen at some point. Soon, companies will be paying to use this man's patent.

I hate people...

He said the satellites would be visible in the night sky by employing sunlight reflectors, with multiple satellites linked together to create a message large enough to be seen.

I agree with you, Thorfinn. We're exposed to advertisements at every corner, click and turn. There's BIG money to be made in advertising, all for the purpose of dishing your message to the masses. Space should not be corrupted by these fools trying to make another buck.

I have a good friend that's in the advertising business and he refers to it as 'brain pollution'.

Thats a really really awful idea, what if you wanted to go out into the wilderness to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and there you are laying on the ground outside your tent surrounded by nature in all it's glory , you look up at the starry starry sky just to see

"three pack of extra large y-fronts on special at Asda"

Can't you just see how anxious aliens are to meet us? As if we humans didn't do enough dumb #, we gotta come up with this...

I totally agree. Like we don't get enought of advertising. Next thing you know the big dipper will be joined by the Wopper. Just 1.99..... This disgust me. If it did happend I would make it a point to not buy any product that I saw up in the sky.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a pretty neat idea ?

I mean come on, how far " outside the box " was this guy thinking when he came up with this one ?

I like it !

Reminds me of an episode of The Tick where the vilian carves him name into the moon with a lazer.

This is obscene! If this really happens it will be a sad day indeed. I can't imagine companies utilizing this forone reason.. the general populace would be angered at the company who used it. I think most people feel over advertised too anyway, this, I think, would make people avoid the company not purchase from it.

I think I saw a far sight comic. It was a billboard at the edge of space and it said "Eat at Joes". Something likem.

This disgusts me. Will advertising stop at nothing? Will they ever stop flashing cheesy ads in our faces in desperate attempts for us to buy their products? They want to ruin the beauty of space for the sake of soft drinks and cigarettes.

How do they plan to join orion and the andromeda galaxy? I think this is laughable and infuriating at the same time.

Im sure it will be years before we see ads in space. This guy has just got a patent. Nothing more, yet...

I too am P*I*S*S*E*D OFF about the light pollution. I used to watch satellites and meteors from the house. Then the whole desert erupted in housing developments, now I can only see the brightest objects like Jupiter and Orion's belt.

not far... isaac asimov had a very similar idea in his story "buy jupiter" in 1958.

and i doubt it would be used even by the richest companies. to send up that many satellites or whatever it is would probably cost more than it's worth.

I don't see how a few satellites with sunlight reflectors can make a readable message. Unless they are really large or there are a lot of them, you probably will not be able to see them. Both those possiblities are very expensive. I think it's just one of those far-out never to be used patents.

Let me guess....the first ad will be....

"EAT AT JOE'S!"

At least it's just a patent....it'll never go anywhere....

a small satelite when properly positioned, can reflect enough sunlight to be brighter than venus.

That Icarus from Die Another Day was cool but...it was very weak. IRL that thing wouldve melted that whole lake in like five seconds.
