Prostitution and Craigslist

Topic started on 20-7-2008 @ 09:23 AM by RushLimbaugh

How is it that prostitution is freely advertised on Craigslist.com without any police intervention for the most part? If you look under the erotic services category you see many ads by "escorts" with various descriptions such as full body massages, orgies, full service (sex), etc. I understand that the police do utilize Craigslist in apparent sting operations, but still, how does Craigslist and these "prostitutes' constantly get away with these illegal activities?

Prostitution should be legal....like they do in Vegas. It might cut down on all the molesters and rapists and stuff. If a consenting adult wants to sell their body for sexual pleasures to another consenting adult...whats the big deal?

I say, why don't you call them up and see who that really is, i bet most of them are cops.
But on serious note, police most of the time are after "big fish", going after "small fish" makes it hard to infiltrate and capture the "big fish". Thats of course a Hollywood movie ideology, and i am sure all cops do is eat donuts and spying on neighbors.

I cant believe some of these answers here. He asked a legitimate question about Craigslist. In the exotic section there is freely open prostitution.

I have called quite a few and I never have encountered a "cop." Who knew that prostitution is just a click away eh?

This apparently is a problem, but I suppose that depends on your point of view.

In my area there was a recent sting where the cops called up half a dozen women advertising and they showed up and they went to jail for prostitution.

Where your point of view comes into play is were they doing anything wrong? The hookers or the cops.

Some women see being a hooker as a lifestyle, a job, that actually pays pretty good. If they choose that of their own free will, I don't have a problem with it.

I can see the police having a problem with it, simply because it's illegal and it's their job to enforce the law. Still, I would rather see them chasing heroin dealers and robbers than busting hookers.

Another thing, why would a lady of the night advertise on Craigslist when she knows she will probably walk into a set up. It's used for stings all the time.

I suppose getting busted is just part of the job. If a woman chooses this as an occupation and does so of her own free will, getting busted shouldn't be. In Nevada and Amsterdam and other places where prostitution is legal they have rules to govern it. Monthly check ups, desease screening and such.

Yes, hooking on Craigslist is a problem, But I don't think it should be.

So you're saying you have actually called 'quite a few' yourself.

Did you just call them to spread the 'good word' then??

Maybe because some cops realize that laws against prostitution are inherently unconstitutional and they can make better uses of their TAXPAYER FUNDED time.

That, or more likely, cops just aren't smart enough to realize it's all over Craigslist.

The Internet is filled with prostitution/escort services, after all it is the world`s oldest profession.

I don`t understand what the big deal is, if you don`t want those services don`t check the adds out.

Real simple.

Prostitution is against Craigslist own TOS. All one has to do is flag the offensive posts and Craigslist should take care of the rest.

It's really all about Federal vs State and Local Enforcement...

The crime actually occurs at the place the Prostitution Occurs...

Under State and Local Laws.

Craigslist spans many local and state jurisdictions and Prostitution does not normally fall within the purview of the Federal Government at least not exclusively.

I read somewhere that OKC was taking it seriously and trying to "cuff and stuff" the offenders.

Pardon the pun.

They get away with it for a few reasons.

1) Putting prostitutes in jail is really a thankless job, accomplishes little, and takes away from investigating more invasive crimes/patrolling.

2) There are entirely too many sites/ads/girls to go after effectively, at least I'd think. Additionally, most tech folks are ahead of the authorities so it would simply change the avenue of delivery rather than really curtail the problem.

3) I really don't think most people see prostitution as a problem, especially when the hookers aren't walking the street (i.e. visible).

I'm not sure why prostitution is illegal. It seems more like a health issue than anything else to me.

It's probably a combination of a few things: Christians, American prudishness (see first reason), and that it is hard to tax (a very serious problem it seems).

Why is prostitution even illegal? There are HUNDREDS of murders everyday that go unsolved, THOUSANDS of Rapes of innocent young girls, Kidnappings, missing children, a War on drugs that AMERICA IS LOSING!!!

But our police have time to roust the local madams and call girls? You know what it's about? The MONEY and assets they seize when they bust these girls. They can take ANYTHING they have probable cause to take, and they DO.

If they really cared ANYTHING about these girls they would go after the Pimps and Drug dealers who kidnap the girls from malls, hook them on drugs, and then put them out on the street.
