Boy Scouts : International : Survival : All Scouting Organizations

This thread is dedicated only about the Survival Forum aspect of being within the Boy Scouts of America, as well as the Scouting movement in that Boy Scouts is an international organization. It is in no way about conspiracies, nor conspiracy related in regards to Scouting. I am stating this because I am a member of the Boy Scouts of America, and I am attempting to bring some survival aspects to ATS in regards to Scouting for anyone who cares to learn a thing or two in the aspect of being prepared.

All of this having been said, I have outlined specifically what the thread is about, so there is no misunderstanding whatsoever. I felt it necessary to make these statements as I have seen negative and attacking threads here about connections within Scouting here on ATS as well as other sources, and while I feel it is important that you have your own thoughts on things, this one specific area is only about the survival aspect.

Boy Scouts of America

I have been with the Boy Scouts of America as an adult leader now for just over two years, as well as having been a Webelos at age 10, and then later a Police Explorer, a branch of the Boy Scouts of America. I absolutely love the survival aspect of this organization and the leadership skills in that they teach the youth to "Be Prepared" in all things survival as well as later on in life. I am currently a Unit Commissioner within the local District I am in, as well as Friends of Scouting Committee Chair, and Finance Committee Chair, and a general guy to go to within Scouts as someone who has knowlegde and can give advice when it's needed.

After having started this thread, I am opening it up for survival discussion, and questions for anyone who might want to know more about this organization in the survival aspect as well as how to join, or any other question, not conspiracy related in regards to the Boy Scouts of America, as well as the international branches, and all other "Scout" related organizations as well. All organizations that teach similar survival aspects for youth as well as life skills are of course well so that no one is secluded.

Please understand, I do know this thread is within a conspiracy theory website, but this is for what I've outlined only. As well as this, I've intentionally left out the District name I am in. I've seen enough hate on this website alone just for even talking about Scouts and any organizational affiliations, so I am keeping this as neutral as possible.

All I can say is YES YES YES.

The scouts provide a broad based survival skills set based on the teachings, merit badges, essential skills etc.

In addition it teaches leadership, teamwork, commitment etc.

having just one scout in your group would improve you survival odds. Several is just gravy

Your thread is basically an advertisement for the Boy Scouts. Which is fine, since it's more to inform than advertise. But its purpose, its title, is:

However, I think that when considering whether or not to join an organization...

whether or not it is an organization that directly promotes and partakes in bigotry and discrimination is a very important factor.

It's no secret that there are some atheists on this forum. And most likely (I think there were a few, I don't think about it much as I'm not a bigot), a few bis or gays. Why does this matter?

Because if they try to join, and the Boy Scouts finds out, there is a good chance that they will be discriminated against and not allowed to join.

I, for one, do not promote bigotry. And that is why I cannot support or join the Boy Scouts of America. While its purpose is good, in recent years it has changed, probably from religious influences, and has become an organization of bigotry.

That is something you might "consider" when you "consider joining to survive."

Hmm.. Well I was never in boy scouts (I'm a girl - can girls join? Hmm Don't think so), but I was in Army Cadets here in Canada. I was in Cadets for 6 years - seriously some great times.

My favorite things that we did were:
- Map & Compas (Topographical - we were ground pounders - or so the Sea Cadets called us lol.)
- Traps & Snares
- Biathalon etc..
- Building Shelters
- Lighting Fires with ONE match (those contests were fun)

Everyone always asks me if all we ever did was march around - I always hated that question.

My favorite exercise, a few of us Senior's went out with some members of the Reg. Force. We trained with them for a weekend. Solid weekend full of sleeping (but not really because they would wake you up every 2 hours of so to move to another location) under the stars, Recconnaisance Patrol's and C7 rifles with Blank Rounds.

Fun stuff - but at 19 I aged out and went off to University...I'm thinking I would like to get involved again as a Civillian Instructor - there aren't many kids joining groups like this anymore...

Hi Carrot. I forgot to say that the Girl Scouts don't discriminate like the Boy Scouts do.

I really like the mission of the Boy Scouts. It's wasn't conceived as a bad organization, or one used to push some kind of fundamentalist agenda, or one to discriminate against millions of Americans. But it's gone a bit sour, at least a significant part of it. I don't think it's beyond repair, which is why it bothers me.

Great reply. While "girls" are not allowed to join, as an adult, female leaders are welcome to join. I've not seen any discrimination in this regard towards females as adult leaders. I'm in a supervisory position, with two Packs and a Troop. Both Packs have female Cubmasters, as well as all Unit's within the District I'm in having female adult leaders.

There is also the Venture program, where females and males from ages 14 to 21 are in co-ed Units, with adult leaders, and there is of course the "Two-Deep Leadership" where two adult leaders are always present for Youth Protection purposes.

"Girls" can however join the Girl Scouts of America, while older females can be adult leaders. Hope that's answered your questions.

Why keep this thread to ''Boy Scouts of America''?

The scouting movement originally started in the UK by Baden Powell and is an International Organisation - Remember this is an International Forum.

I was once a Cub Scout many years ago and would recommend it to any child, as long is it gets the child away from the TV and Sofa.

Girls in the UK can join either the Boy Scouts or the Girl Guides nowadays.

There are several other 'uniformed' youth organisations in the UK:- The Boys/Girls Brigade (Church-based organisation), The Sea Scouts and Air Scouts (Scouting offshoots - depending on location in UK), Horse Rangers, Army, Air, Marine & Sea Cadets (Military affiliated), Girls Venture Corps, St. Johns Ambulance Cadets.

Hmmm, Could be an opening here for a 'new style' youth movement based on Outdoor/Adventure skills without the military style/religion base.

I believe the Boy Scouts are a great organization for teaching children the basics of good citizenship and self-sufficiency. I've never been a scout myself, but my two oldest sons were, and they loved it.

As to the issue of survival, I prefer the Boy Scout Field Handbook over the Army survival Manual. It's much simpler to follow, has plenty of illustrations, and is written with the average person in mind.

I considered what you had to say, and have since changed the title as well as the opening post in regards to Scouts. It was not with intent to seclude anyone, as of course Boy Scout is an international organization.

I am only hoping to keep the thread from degrading into a conspiracy related discussion, which will not be easy as some people just have all things conspiracy and wish to drag everything into that. This is for the Survival Forum and all aspect of survival in regards to these organization.

Of course, the Boy Scouts was started by Baden Powell, in the United Kingdom.

And I do firmly believe that I could win almost any survivor show, as long as I wasn't voted off for some trifle reason.

I learned many skills while in the scouts, but even more on my own when I spent massive times outdoors. Hunting, fishing, fire, knots, shelters, cold weather survival, wet climate survival, tracking... you name it, I tried to learn as much as I could about it.

To me, Scouting is one of the best organizations that a child can join, and it keeps them out of gangs.

Ah the Scouts. Those were the days. I very much enjoyed my years with the scouts, and it helped me in my army career as well.

As silly as it may be, My favorite part of the scouts was going to the Jamborees. I loved meeting other scouts from all over My state. My most memorial Jamboree we had a troop from the UK join us. I was very impressed with those boys.

My second favorite part was the camping. We would go every other weekend in the summer and have at least three to some times as much as 5 polar bear camp outs in the winter. We did a lot of survival camping. You know the type. grab you knife and head to the woods with what you have on.

Once a year we would also have a Military week end. A friend of our scout masters was a retired drill Sargent, he would put us threw two days of basic training.

For me at least it was a good thing. It prepared me for when I joined. Drill Sargent Rice did not hold back on us boys. We got the full work out not a scaled back version.

All and All I would have to say being in The Scouts was the best decision I ever made.

Our troop did the Military week end for one purpose. It was never meant to train us for military life it was to teach us a lesson. Us boys would always try to ware BDU's to our troop meetings.

Our scout master said OK you guys wanna pretend to be soldiers we will show you what its really like. It just kinda became a regular thing after that.

I have heard of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Sea Scouts, Indian Guides, Young Marines, R.O.T.C., J.R.O.T.C.. What other "Scout" type organizations are there out there, and how do they teach survival skills?

Are any other ATS'ers out there a part of, or in the past a part of any of these types of orgnizations, or considering, or have considered it in the past?

Haha, I have been in a few of them:-

Cub Scouts - Cub
Air Training Corps - Cadet
Army Cadet Force - Adult Instructor

The Army Cadets were the ones out of the three that really taught basic skills, but I think its really down to the Instructors and what they are like and what 'their interests' really are. I was fortunate enough to have had an OC who was an ex army commando and really loved teaching the 'outdoor' stuff which the cadets as well as myself loved.

I'm "coming out" as a homophobe and I urge more people to join me. I am defining "homophobe" as someone who is afraid of homosexual activists, hence the suffix "phobia." Gay activists use this term to bludgeon opponents. Let's embrace it instead.

I had always accepted the mass media's portrayal of gays as a colorful minority like the Croatians, who have a special "sexual orientation." They meet each other at their bars and do their thing. As long as they kept it within their own community, what did I care?

But they don't. To my surprise I recently learned that most gays prefer heterosexual males. My source is a book, The Caricature of Love, (1957), by Dr. Hervey Checkley, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Medical College of Georgia. A gay friend also confirmed this fact to me. That would explain the amount of gay porn on the Internet found by searching the term "straight men."
