Wise, I have to tell you, you are going to be a perfect fit at the Fight Club.

Well I've put myself out there.

I'm thinking of a newb showdown. Entertaining for us newbs, and for the older guys and gals who like to set back and poke fun at us, and give us wedgies between the rounds, or at least I think that's how this works...

i would be more then happy to debate... Politics is my favorite subject, and i tend to lean republican....

Why don't you guys U2U each other, agree to fight, then one of you U2U either MemoryShock or Semperfortis to give you a topic and get you started.

Well I'm still new to ATS, but if anyone has any topics they want to debate a new member like me about let me know, I wouldn't mind getting into something more formal and organized like the fight club -
Topics - Environmental trends, historical culture, education systems, entertainment pro-cons?
just throwin out some ideas.

Just contact any of the members above via U2U and agree to debate. If you can't agree on a topic a moderator will pick one for you. They're actually very good at that.
Once you have found an opponent and agreed to debate send either semperfortis or MemoryShock a U2U and they will set up the whole thing for you.

In the meantime you can familiarize yourself with the format and some tactics by visiting the debate forum and reading some of the older or ongoing debates.

The standard debate has five posts from each side (an opening, three responses, and a closing statement). You have twenty-four hours from the time stamp on the previous post to respond. In addition, each Fighter has one automatically-approved 24-hour extension.

Those guidelines can be adjusted in Challenge Matches if the fighters agree. For example, a recent fight featured fast response times (four hours between posts, with a sleep break scheduled), and semperfortis and Skyfloating are currently tossing around the idea of a one-day debate (one hour between posts).

Before you commit to a debate, it's a good idea to read some old debates so that you know what you're in for. Here is the index for the Debate Forum.

Oh, Lucid .. it would SO be fun to debate you! After the debate you are setting up now, I'll be next in line .. surely we can find an agreeable topic.

Maybe, if you're interested, we could even do one of the Holiday "ishes" (they're shorter than regular debates and allowed/expected to be humorous).

Holiday Skirmish Sign-Ups

As has been intimated, we are going to try and revive the Holiday Skirmish idea that can be seen halfway down this page.

There were only three that year but I think we can do a few more this year. It wouldn't be a tournament but rather a single round of Challenge Matches that would coincide with each other as far as the start date, which is tentatively scheduled for December 12th (the date may be amended should there be an overwhelming consensus to).

These debates are intended to be light hearted in nature and are really just an excercise in the spirit of the holiday. I had a freaking blast debating The Vagabond a few years ago so I definitely think many here would enjoy the more toned down nature.

That said, this announcement is intended to gauge the interest. I will keep a list that I will add to for those who express interest.

If you are interested, please send me a u2u so that I can add you to the list and assign Fighter status to your account.

***DO NOT u2u interest if you feel that you may not be able to finish the debate.***

It takes about a week to finish a debate and about 2-3 hours to compose a response so please keep that in mind when factoring in other Holiday activities.

That said, these debates are supposed to be fun!!

Thanks for the info on debates, I have my first debate coming up right away with Lucid, I was going to do vegetarianism on the con side, but I couldn't find enough facts backing me up, Hope you all have better luck than me!

My first debate was (is, maybe) going to be with Americandingbat We plan on doing a Gnosticism versus Christian Orthodoxy debate. We were planning on doing it soon but we decided to push it back to late December. So I am free to debate whenever, whoever, whatever (I do have a wedding to attend on the 15th though).

I'd love to debate with you. It seems the vegetarian debate is just begging for some attention So there is that. But I would definitely be interested in debate on 'philosophy of ethics'! Is there a specific ethical problem that comes to mind?

As per your u2u, you want to have a religion debate? Your idea was whether religion is good for humanity or not? Can you elaborate on your argument a little more? And do you mean religious belief itself, or do you mean the Abrahmic religions? Either way, I am positive I would want to do this debate
