I'm ok with that, as long as the topic doesn't involve number crunching! Anything else is fine.

If it is okay with you, I will wait until Monday to have MemoryShock start the debate. I will be out of town until then.

Let me know if that date is okay with you.

Awesome. I still haven't read the instructions yet. Will do in the morning.

Did you have a couple in mind?

While you are at it, check out the second link in my signature to read previous debates from other members.

Lots of good ones in this latest tourney. Members I'd suggest reading are:

SkyFloating
MemoryShock
nyk537
Schrodingers Dog
Ian McClain
chissler
semperfortis

Actually, they're all pretty good. Just read anything and everything.

We'll find it out when MS puts up the thread. It's a random topic and he picks who has which side also. Sound okay?

I just don't like picking topics. If you have a topic in mind, I'd be glad to do that, though.

Ok we'll go with MS' topic then. Looking forward to it. See you on Monday/Tuesday.

Hi must be a way!

The debates are pretty easy - the rules, anyway! There's two types - though they both work pretty much the same: "Challenge Matches" and "Tournaments".

The last tournament just wrapped up, so what you're probably looking for is a 'Challenge Match'.

These are just a thread with 1) an opening statement from each participant, 2) three replies each, and 3) a closing statement from each participant. Posts from each side, first one then the other.

Once all the posts are in, the thread is locked, and an anonymous panel of three judges determines the winner.

Each post can be up to 10,000 characters, and there's a few specific rules on how much quoting from external sources you can do, and how many links you can provide in each post. There's a standard 24-hour maximum time limit between posts, but that's flexible if everyone agrees differently beforehand.

The topic of each debate can either be pre-agreed upon by the two participants, or the moderator can choose a random topic, or you can provide a list to the moderator to choose, or whatever you feel appropriate that the moderator agrees to.

To start a debate, use U2Us: first, to the opponent to agree to debate and what the ground rules are, then once you both agree to that, notify a debate moderator: Either semperfortis or MemoryShock, currently.

Definitely look at the previous 'Challenge Match' debates! The rules of each debate are specified in the opening post (they're pretty much all the same), and that's the definitive reference:

Debate Forum Page

There's other fun stuff, like a ranking system, the 'fighter' title on your avatar, and our private pub, but that should get you started!

(moderators please expand or correct if I left anything out!)

Okey dokey.

I am interested in a Challenge with anyone starting on w/c 24th November 2008.

Pretty open on Topics though would like to bring something new to ATS as well,

So if anyone would like to challenge me, put your interest here and then we can discuss topics and work out the if the time frame fits yourself and discuss potential new topics to ATS.

Looking forward to any reply.

Kind Regards,

Elf

Seeing as I have nothing better to do, I'd be interested in debating.

I'd like to start out with someone who has almost as much experience as I do (none) so that I don't get slaughtered and have my ATS guts removed and smeared on the forum walls.

Well I'm pretty new at debates so I don't have much experience.

So if you don't mind debating a novice with little or no skills and want to pad your debate stats I'll reluctantly accept a challenge.

Keep in mind I'm not very smart, lack any competitive drive, and enjoy any type of attention, especially consolation after a loss.

Let me know if you want to debate, and please take it easy on this old dog.

Ha. I remember when you were Schrodinger's puppy.

Now you are a big dog.

A giant, drooling, barking Saint Bernard that sets on its inferiors, not purposely, but because he does not notice them.

Please don't hurt me..

Ok, you gots me, I'm busted.

[wisefoolishnesshide]Note to self, these newbie fighters are very clever, threatening SDog's status.[wisefoolishnesshide]

Wise, I think that debating is not for you, plus it's really tedious and boring.
I hear the "writer" forum is all the rage with the kids these days.

Naw, the last time I went to the writers forum (never), I was bitten by Pavlov's Dog... I'm not very good at making up stories anyway..
