By the sounds of it that file was somehow damaged on the disc...

That file is the main data file of the game as well, so that will be a problem.

Does that error come up when trying to install the game, or when you try to play the game?

clean the top and bottom of the disc and try again.

Just download it off bittorrent and use your CD key to activate it. I believe Blizzard even has a service where you can do this on their website legitimately. I cannot find the link unfortunately, so best if you just call Blizzard and ask for help that way.

if none of the above works just try to do a complete re-install. USUALLY (just typically) if a disk is damaged to the point of file corruption, it wont continue with the installation.

There could've been a screw up during the intial installation.

Just use the add/remove programs feature and make sure Everything "diablo 2" is gone

try again

If that still doesnt work

you can buy D2 from wal-mart for like 9.99

Just thought I`d toss in my two cents: I got a wierd error message when I went to install Diablo 2 the first time too, but on installing the Lords of Destruction expansion, it worked fine.

Good luck.
