Polar base evacuated as ice melts early

www.cnn.com

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- Russian scientists are evacuating a research station built on an ice floe drifting in the western Arctic Ocean because global warming is melting the ice early, a spokesman said.

The North Pole-35 station, where 21 researchers and two dogs live in huts, will be pulled out this week instead of late August, said Sergei Balyasnikov of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in St. Petersburg.

"The evacuation is ahead of schedule because of global warming," Balyasnikov said.

The nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika will escort a research vessel to the station, which is drifting between the Franz Josef Land archipelago and the island of Novaya Zemlya in the western Arctic.

The researchers are packing up their winterized huts and equipment to prepare for the arrival of the icebreaker and the research vessel Mikhail Somov, Balyasnikov said.

The most telling quote in this article is that they are evacuating "because of global warming"

And to think the WSJ recently published an Op-Ed calling Global Warming a Delusion.

Yeah they seem quite eager to blame global warming here. After all, ice never melts on it's own right?

In the north pole?

No, ice shouldn't just melt naturally at the north pole, it's the north pole!

YOU don't melt naturally there. Step away from protection, and you're a Popsicle.

And now, for the first time, we're seeing the pole melting.

This is a drastic change in climate. There's no way in heck nature could have pulled a reversal off that quickly. This has man made screw-up written all over it.

Novaya Zemlya is the last place on earth I'd want to be drifting near. Wonder if the ice is really melting from all the nuclear testing and dumping the russkis did there.

Well, if it's a "man made screw-up", it is so monumental in size as to effect Mars also. Compare pics of the Martian poles from the 70s to pictures today.

I see this from the completely opposite perspective. There's no way in heck man could have pulled a reversal off that quickly. This has natural screw-up written all over it.

I found the following piece a little easier to believe than all the agenda ridden shock-horror-we're-all-gonna-die-if-we-don't-give-Al-Gore-our-money pieces.

www.theregister.co.uk...

During the summer of 2000 there was "a large body of ice-free water about 10 miles long and 3 miles wide near the pole". Also in 2000, Dr Claire Parkinson at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center was quoted as saying: "The fact of having no ice at the pole is not so stunning."

And....

Last summer, the headlines read "First ever traversal of the Northwest Passage". This sounds very dramatic, except that it is entirely incorrect. As the BBC reported: "In 1905, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first person to successfully navigate the Northwest Passage, in a wooden sailboat." The Northwest Passage has been navigated at least one hundred times over the last century.

According to official US Weather Bureau records (pdf) from 1922, there was open sailing very close to the North Pole that year. Anthony Watts unearthed this quote from the Weather Bureau:

"In fact, so little ice has never before been noted. The expedition all but established a record, sailing as far north as 81 degrees in ice-free water.

So, if there is historical data available showing regular melts and open water, why are we all being led to believe this is some doomsday scenario being played out?

While I do agree there is a drastic change in climate as of late, I don't think that the entire blame lies with mankind and it's effect on the earth and climate. I am certainly sure what we're doing is not helping the cause any, I believe that our influence is not as large of a percent as we're led to believe.

Our planet has gone through pole reversals before and something of that nature could turn the planet upside down (excuse the bad pun) much quicker then any of us would like to think about. The changes in climate and such could be the early warning signs of just such an event.

Something to consider...

Absolutely.

In fact, I was just reading some article the other day about some sections of the earth where ice is "growing".

Isn't it funny how global warming kind of picks and chooses when and where to strike?

The earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years long before humans were around. I totally believe in climate change but I think its part of a natural cycle more so than human cause.

The other side of that coin is they are blaming "Global Warming" to keep the myth alive.

We are seeing these things for the first time in our lifetimes. The cycle is nothing new.
In my opinion, If man were responsible for such a drastic climate change so quickly, man would not be around to see it.

As someone else mentioned in the thread, earth is not alone in these climate changes. The sun is key to our climate and it's changes. When the sun is active, it gets hot in the solar system. Ice melts.

Google is your friend.

google is your friend. All the the planets are heating up. This man made global warming propaganda has everything to do with agenda 21 and sustainable development which is the code word for corral the sheep. Also don't forget the carbon tax.

if your afraid of global warming move to canada i can guarantee you nothing has globally warmed here at all

lets bring back all that hairspray from the 70's and blow a couple more holes in there so its summer all year long

Ya just don't know who or what to believe anymore.

All you ever hear these days is how global warming is melting the ice and how we need to stop it. But the fact is there are other factors involved in this process. I was just reading about Active volcanos deep bel;ow the ice That they now know erupted around 207 bc, around the time of alexander the great. They have also discovered that in western anartica there is a hole punched in the ice cause by the heat of this volcano. Here is the link.
www.iht.com...

They still assert that most other regions of anartica are experiencing meltage due to the warming oceans. But correct me if im wrong, This has happened other times in history just like ice ages have. A cycle that will continue no matter what affects our industry have on the world's oceans and air. We may speed it up but we will never stop it from happening.

Actually, I agree with you.

There is a slow and natural solar heat issue occurring.
But here on earth, instead of it being that same slow progression, it's quite drastic.

Essentially, we are accelerating it at an alarming rate.
Yeah, if we weren't accelerating it, then it would still get hot... a couple of thousand years from now... but not NOW.

Like I said, this has man made screw-up written all over it.
Natural screw-ups are slow and predictable.
This blind sided us and melted one of two places on earth we thought weren't possible to melt for a very long time to come.
