Armed forces 'get free education'

news.bbc.co.uk

Service personnel are to be given university education free of charge after they end their duty with the armed forces, it has been reported.

According to the News of the World, personnel who complete six years service in the Army, Royal Navy or RAF will qualify for the scheme.

The government will pay tuition fees to study for GCSEs, A-levels, university degrees or other qualifications.

The measure is thought to be in Thursday's Armed Forces Command Paper.

This document will deal with a whole range of welfare issues affecting soldiers, sailors and airmen.

when i first started looking at jobs before doing a course in college and going into Uni, i was considering the armed forces.

i was looking at IT coms and some of the things that stuck out was
that when one leaves they will have quilifications equivilant to an NVQ which they can use when they leave.

(yes it looked apealing)

why does this look like simmiler to the US sceme of getting people in?
they would be better off getting the ASBOs and putting them on the front lines

I don't know how "free" it is; most of them have already paid.

The US military has always used the "scheme" of paying for education to get guys to enlist. It's a good idea.

My husband served in Desert Storm (Air Force) and after his 4 years they paid 100% for his BA in Engineering+All Books+All Supplies+ they paid him monthly to go to school and preferred him NOT to work while in school.

It was a DEAL! He just finished his Masters in Business but they didn't pay for that.

Big deal.

In Canada you join the forces, they will do the same thing.

Also, if you have a degree then join the forces they will pay off your student loan.

I hear this far too often, and I have to ask the darn question: Do you want those ASBO idiots with weapons? I say no way in hell!

The British Armed forces are elite, let them stay elite.

Incidentally, this is a great move. It should increase recruitment.
