John McCain said last night during a campaign tele-conference that he would bring back a military draft in the United States only in the case of a 'World War III' scenario.

During a July 2006 interview on CNN, McCain was asked about the following statement by Newt Gingrich: "We're in the early stages of what I would describes as the Third World War and, frankly, our bureaucracies aren't responding fast enough." Asked whether he agreed, McCain said:

"I do to some extent. I think it's important to recognize that we have terrorist organizations which -- who are dangerous by themselves, are now being supported by radical Islamic governments, i.e., the Iranians, which makes them incredibly more dangerous because they are trained, equipped, motivated and assisted in every way by the Iranians."

Sounds a little too......i dont know......militaristic for my taste.

The draft is "okay" for world war three? .... Why?

I agree with him completely. If we were in a large scale war where the survival of the United States as a sovereign nation were at stake, the government would be fully justified in enacting a military draft. The first role of any government, afterall, is to provide for the protection of its citizens.

I would fully support McCain, Obama or any president in making that decision under those circumstances.

More sensationalism. If you read the whole article, it states:

Asked about that possibility by a potential voter in Florida during a telephone "town hall meeting," McCain said: "I don't know what would make a draft happen unless we were in an all-out World War III." ...

McCain, a Vietnam veteran, said the draft during that conflict weighed most heavily on lower-income Americans, and that this should not be repeated.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

So apparently McCain is against the draft, but realizes that one might become necessary in the future. Well, duh!

The draft has been a possibility since the country was founded. Emergency times require emergency measures; that's just how it is. We do not live in a world where people can always make nice. Some people want to kill other people, and if the other person is you, then you either fight or die.

I'm not in favor of a draft, and certainly not in favor of McBama, er, OCain, er, McCain (sorry, get those mixed up sometimes
). But what I am less in favor of is the continual spinning of every syllable that either of these idiots utter into something they did not say.

McCain did not say he was in favor of a draft. He said that a draft might be necessary if national security demanded it, as a last resort.

I do not like McCain because he sponsored a bill that stripped freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, because he co-sponsored a bill that would have granted amnesty to millions of illegal aliens without even trying to prevent more from entering, because he has a history of flip-flopping on issues, and because I think the man is just plain going senile based on his speeches.

There's plenty of bad things to go around, without making up more. That is what allowed Bush to do what he has done.

I see. So....John McCain gives his own interpretation of WW3 in this very paragraph i've provided in my thread.

Its about "Terrorists" who, for all intents and purposes, are throwing rocks into the ocean to try and hit us from afar.

WW3 = war on terror. We should inact the draft??

Then please tell me why our government has spent TRILLIONS of dollars on the following:

In a world where technology has changed the battle field, and can be fought without a single troop in the field, explain to me WHY we would need a draft?

If WW3 were "so bad" we needed a draft, there'd be no reason for one, because we could finally use all of our wonderfully expensive and cool new gear.

Draft?

Please. McCain is just getting senile, and thinks everyone should serve like he did.

Thats not American.

I did read the entire aritcle, thank you very much

the passage that says

McCain, a Vietnam veteran, said the draft during that conflict weighed most heavily on lower-income Americans, and that this should not be repeated.

is refering to a SPECIFIC draft. Not an over all idea of a draft.

YOU are just, once again, creating an argument that does not exist.

Thanks

I do not want to see our children go to yet another useless war created out of greed and non acceptance of the differences which make our world what it is.

My fear is that the draft will take our soldiers away from our homes and countries and leave us open to corrupt government practices upon its people, food shortages, and encampments for the dissidents.

This war will be fought like no other and lets face it America is over due for war on our own soil. When that day happens I would hate to be "Protected" by bureaucracy and soldiers that do not even speak English as their native tongue.

Oh, forgive me for creating the OP in this thread... wait! That wasn't me!

Oh, well, then forgive me for putting words into McBush's mouth... oh, darn, again not me...

What was the argument I was creating that didn't exist again? I seem to remember refuting an argument that didn't exist...

Exactly, and by "refuting" an argument with your spinning of a fact, you are creating an argument that doesnt exist

McCain never said he doesnt believe we should never impose the draft again

he said the draft should never, again, have the impact on lower-income americans like it did when he was drafted

big big.....[size=10] BIG difference there

And mccain proves it for me:

John McCain said last night during a campaign tele-conference that he would bring back a military draft in the United States only in the case of a 'World War III' scenario.

He's for the draft. In his own words.

then, i followed that up with his interpretation of WW3

then i followed that up with reasons why the draft is not necessary (go see the list of trillion dollar gadgets)

And you still support him?

Well....thats your opinion.

Again, if the sovereignty of the United States were being threatened during a large-scale war, I would support any president who enacted a draft. On that note, I completely agree with him.

I don't entirely agree with the idea that we're in the beginning stages of WW3 with regards to the Middle East. Major war? Possibly. A true WW3? No. I would not support a draft, at this time, for that purpose.

I certainly do not believe that you can win without boots on the ground, either. You can certainly cripple an enemy with a technological advantage, but at the end of the day, you still need infantry to hold ground on the modern battlefield and I think that'll be true for the forseeable future.

OK, that was funny.

The spin was on your end, not mine. You said:

then, i followed that up with his interpretation of WW3

then i followed that up with reasons why the draft is not necessary

That is spin, my friend, when you try to piece together different answers to different questions in order to formulate an answer that you want to hear. What is not spin is to point out that the point you are pressing is not taken from a single answer, but from different answers.

Now this is what's really hilarious!

And you still support him?

I wouldn't support John McCain for dogcatcher! I thought I made that perfectly clear in my first reply to you, but apparently not. So I'll try this again...

I do not support McCain-Feingold.
I do not support McCain-Lieberman.
I do not support McCain-Kennedy.
I do not support amnesty for illegal aliens, political limits on free speech or free assembly, NAFTA, CAFTA, an everlasting police action by our military in Iraq (or anywhere else!), the Patriot Act, or free Viagra for all!

I DO NOT SUPPORT JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT!

I know those letter-into-words-into-ideas thingys can get hard sometimes, so please re-read the above a few more times until you have it right.

Now, how about a nice informative thread about how McCain's eyes are too close together, or maybe how Obama's third cousin had an employer whose grandfather knew a guy who once visited a KKK rally?

There are issues here that outweigh these silly mud-pie projectiles you seem to be so determined to throw around.

I do agree with you. Gota have boots on the ground....sorry i did say you could win without a single troop. Thats not what i meant

To refine what i meant:

You can win with the technology and not FORCE people into service.

Really? I hope you don't seriously believe that. No one in the military does. You can't win a war without having troops on the ground. Doesn't matter how cool the toys are, without grunts there to hold the ground, you're just expending ordinance.

Not American? WTF? So it's "American" to NOT serve your country? Most people that do believe in a selective service/draft think that there should be two choices: Either the military, or some sort of community service.

Or do you have the opinion that it's OK for everyone else to serve their country but you?

Wow. more right-winged "conservative" whacko- babble.

It is UNAMERICAN to FORCE someone into military service.

How you extracted your ignorant incoherent babble from my statement is far beyond me.

Oh, and, in typical neo-con fascist style, you neglected to read further down, where i retracted my statement about no "foot soldiers" on the ground.

But thats about all i've come to expect from certain people here

As a dictionary definition Liberal!-- And as one who has served in the US armed forces....And as one who is opposed to Wars of Aggression..etc.

I want a draft instated immediately.

I want one with ZERO loopholes.

We need to have everyone .. rich or poor.. having sacrifice..

In college and the quota for officers is full?..

To damn bad.. get your ass in gear.. nut to butt and do some service!

What else is going to wake up the population faster then a draft?

It should be a Constitutional amendment!

Wow, bring on the hate! I love it!! Just love it!!! And I'm the fascist????

Guess we should have just said no to the draft in WW2, right? Just wasn't needed.

And you're right, I did miss your retraction statement. Sue me.

well, thank God for us all then, that you are not in a position to make any judgements for the rest of us, henry.

Forcing service on unwilling americans is, in its self, un-american.

I agree. You draft, it's everyone.

Check out a read called, "What did you do in the class war?" It came out in the 1970s (I believe). The author said that the guys from Harvard rolled up to the draft board with medical records getting them out of military service, and the middle class kids just went and did their duty.
