Catholic Group Says It Will Monitor Florida Election

POSTED: 5:02 pm EST March 8, 2004

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A Catholic peace group says it will monitor an election in the United States for the first time ever when it dispatches observers to Florida in November.

Gov. Jeb Bush says their plan is politically motivated and an insult to Florida.

Monday at the state Capitol, the group called "Pax Christi USA" announced plans to bring in teams of election monitors from around the world to focus on elections in four counties: Duval, Broward, Dade and Palm Beach.

A spokesman says he hopes the presence of the election monitors will help ensure a free and fair election.

David Robinson said the international Catholic organization has never monitored a U.S. election, but he said that given what happened in Florida in 2000, their presence here in November is necessary.

The governor says Florida's new election laws are a model for the nation and so is the amount of funding dedicated for election equipment and voter education.
