U.S. ground troops in Iraq will be mostly finished with combat operations by the middle of 2009, the senior U.S. Army officer in charge of training Iraqi forces said on Wednesday.

"The ground forces will mostly be done by the middle of next year," Army Lt. Gen. James Dubik told the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee.

Well, this is certainly good news. I'm not too keen on his statement of "Some form of partnership and assistance ... in my opinion is still necessary." as I figure at this point the time has come to cut the umbilical and let Baby Iraq live on it's own completely, but hell, at least it's some positive news from the region for a change.
