Anyone experience something similar?
Yes.
A long time ago, at the end of the summer that I started what I'd call »advanced meditation« - spontaneously, without knowing that's what it was
– I was in bed one night drifting off to sleep when I heard a distinctly audible voice calling out my name from one of the bedroom doors.
As I said, I was drifting off, but I was not yet asleep; more to the point, I immediately turned around and looked towards the door where I heard it
coming from. (I am insisting on this detail because immediate identification of an exact location is uncharacteristic of dreams – but I wasn't
dreaming anyway.)
Needless to say, there was nobody on the doorstep (or in the apartment, for that matter).
It was a soft, young, very gentle and kind female voice. And there was no special »urgency« in it. If anything, there was an element of playfulness
to it; or just calling for attention.
I have the suspicion – just a suspicion, I am not sure at all – that it was my own voice. Not that I called myself, but that the entity, whatever
it was, was a projection of myself.
The reason why I have that suspicion is something that happened a few evenings later. I don't want to go into details because it's not really
relevant here - plus I don't have much time here for long dissertations. Suffice it to say that I suddenly opened my eyes, and there was...
something hovering above me. I blinked, and it was gone.
So, on the advice of someone whom I thought knowledgeable, I stopped »feeding« it, whatever it was. In practice, that meant stopping my practices.
(Today, I am not so sure I did the right thing.) Sure enough, »it«, if there was an »it«, soon died of malnutrition.
Then, a few years ago, one late night when I was returning from an award ceremony (it may be relevant that I was the recipient), again I heard a
gentle, female voice calling my name from what seemed the trees and greenery around the houses where I was walking. It was so distinct and
unambiguous – and everything was so quiet – that I actually stopped, trying to see in the dark, and called out: »Where are you?« (trying to
sound as if I had recognised the voice – because »she« sure sounded as though she knew me). No answer. I stood there for almost a minute, but the
voice didn't call again. And nothing seemed to move.
Now, I suppose it
is possible that somebody had seen me walk by (even though it was very dark, and lush trees were all around) and called out
just for the heck of it.
Still, I thought I should mention it – especially because the voice was very similar to the first one, many years earlier.
On the other hand, unexpected voices in the night are probably bound to sound similar...
