Afghan Bomber Hits Indian Embassy

news.bbc.co.uk

A suicide bomber has rammed a car full of explosives into the gates of the Indian embassy in the Afghan capital, killing 28 people, officials say.
Health ministry officials say 141 people were injured in the blast, as people were queuing for visas...

...The BBC's Martin Patience in Kabul says there has been no claim of responsibility yet but the Taleban have vowed to step up attacks in the capital.

It sounds like the Taliban have shot themselves in the foot here. India has a large proportion of Muslims who could arguably be alienated by such an attack.

Or are we talking psy-ops?..

Well Hamid Karzai, for one, apparently agrees with you:

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said the attackers wanted to rupture good relations between Afghanistan and India, while the Afghan interior ministry said it believed the attack was carried out "in co-ordination and consultation with an active intelligence service in the region".

It did not specify which intelligence service it suspected of involvement. But in the past, Afghanistan has accused Pakistani agents of being behind a number of attacks on its soil.

As is so often the case, unless some claims responsibility the whole event will remain a riddle - and even if a group does come forward who knows whether they are to be believed? This actually serves to undergird the perception of all rational, sane human beings that terrorism is at best futile, and arguably even counter-productive to the 'aims' of the perpetrators (-if they actually have any beyond pure hatred): no-one knows 'why' - not the victims, nor their families nor onlookers near and far. Even if ostensible perpetrators do produce some lame excuse for blowing innocent men, women and children to pieces, no-one in their right mind is persuaded to change their opinions in the direction of the murderers' cause!

Condolences to all affected by this madness.

(NB The original article now includes a short video of the aftermath.)

As the Pakistan regime seems to allow the Taliban sanctuary in it's mountainous areas, maybe by attacking the Indian Embassy the Taliban hope to stir up an Indian reaction to Pakistan. After all, the two nations (India & Pakistan) have been at loggerheads since the creation of the Pakistan state.

As I understand it you're suggesting the Taliban want to deepen Indian antipathy towards Pakistan in order to create a siege mentality in Pakistan that encourages the population to cheer on the Taliban who would increasingly be seen as potential defenders and true patriots of Pakistan. Well I suppose if you're a terrorist it makes some kind of twisted sense?!

If you're a Pakistani who's actually got the long-term interests of their homeland at heart (i.e. an entente cordial with India leading to good trading relations and eventual peaceful negotiations over Kashmir) you'd hopefully see through the self-promoting agenda of the Taliban - presuming this isn't some underhand government-backed subterfuge - and call for the culprits to be brought to justice.

If this were perpetrated or backed by forces from the Pakistani military/secret services I still fail to see what it could possibly achieve.

Perhaps someone could enlighten us...
