Plasma, LCDs blamed for accelerating global warming

www.abc.net.au

A gas used in the making of flat screen televisions, nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), is being blamed for damaging the atmosphere and accelerating global warming.

Almost half of the televisions sold around the globe so far this year have been plasma or LCD TVs.

But this boom could be coming at a huge environmental cost.

The gas, widely used in the manufacture of flat screen TVs, is estimated to be 17,000 times as powerful as carbon dioxide.

Well now they are blaming flat screen tv's for global warming. Interestingly enough NF3 isn't covered by the Kyoto protocol. I guess no one saw the flat screen revolution coming.

So who do we blame? Americans for purchasing these global warming technological constructs, or the Japanese companies who make them??

Who wants to bet they will have an environmental tax on appliances next? This is not about the planet, it's about keeping people poor.

you do know the TC?
only a snipit from external sources not the whole article its self

on topic, well they have to come up with new ways to get money from people?
LCD and flat screens use less power then CRTs ,

if you get a 40inch CRT
and a 40inch LCD

which one would use more power?

I myself have a 42" plasma so I guess I'm guilty as sin.

It's going to be hard to give it up unless the temperature goes up substancially. It's not like we get that much warm weather up here.

So you plug how fabulous a flat screen TV is, get everyone to believe they MUST have one..
Then say it contributes to global warming, and yes of course, probably a tax pending in their scenario somewhere.

I'll pay tax on my flat screen, when I see all farmers paying taxes on the flatulence of their cow herd.

The guy with a picture of Barack Obama partying with Osama Bin Laden is crying hoax. You are brandishing propaganda and claiming that others are guilty of the same thing with regards to a separate topic. Very interesting, indeed.

Bodrul, you are correct the CRT uses more power than an LCD or Plasma. But LCDs use mercury, CRTs use lead and Plasma tvs use.....weird plasma, not sure of the safety. If approached properly the dangers in manufacturing can probably be brought under control with regards to safety but I think the amount of time that you use it is going to have a bigger effect on the environment.

Little did anyone think chloroflourocarbons were so damaging to ozone until some chemist sat down with a hunch.
Nasa won't even use cfc's anymore for the main tank which has led to disastrous consequences.

Every time I see something added to the list of causes of global warming I just have this urge to flip off the nearest person in sight. I am so sick and tired of it.

I love nature. I love animals. I love plants. I love the ocean, the mountains, the prairies. I hate waste. I hate total disregard for others. HOWEVER, I hate being manipulated and that's all the gw agenda is. There are other ways to combat pollution than taxing the crap out of everything until everyone is poor. In the same vein, f@*k you Stephane Dion and the carbon tax you rode in on.

So are you disputing the science of global warming or you don't think the consequences will be catostrophic for having plasma/lcd tvs??

I am disputing both.
man-made global warming is a huge hoax and a waste of everyone's time and money. Since GW is a hoax, the tv part is moot.
And damn it, give me back my freon you gw freaks. The new stuff just does not cool like freon did.

What about a deposit that you redeem when you are finished with the item like some Provinces and States do with Glass/Large Plastic bottles.

Increase insulation. Seal up your house. Turn off lights during the day when not needed and close curtains when direct sunlight is shining through them and take advantage of indirect sunlight by opening the curtain for light instead of using the lights.

What about the government actually does it's job and crackdown on corporations that are actually producing real pollution in industrial quantities and what about investing in recycling and what about planting more trees and what about getting off oil and onto solar and hydrogen and what about setting up more nature reserves and what about taking the trash about the ocean and what about using biological waste to make fertilizers and fuels and what about people spending more on the environment and less on war and false security?

The way I see it, pumping more money from the general population into the government is totally useless, and all it will do is fuel elitist agendas. The cure for our environmental problems is with local governance and respect for the environment as well as control of runaway corporate monsters like the agricultural, mining and timber industries in brazil.

Both.

@ sardion:

I think he was talking about his car when he mentioned the freon.

@jpm:

How often do you see crystal clear blue skies anymore?

It depends on where you live. I see them all the time. Even in downtown Toronto it's clear when it's clear. Obviously it's never clear in places that have filthy air, like Mumbai or Shanghai.

Global climate problem is real. If CO2 is to blame or not - it is very unclear.
But in any case- man made pollution exists. How can anyone question that?
Can you safely drink, even with boiling, water in the river near major factory? Do you see stars as bright as you did decade/s ago?
What happens to all toxic wastes that we throw in the ground/rivers/seas/oceans? What happens to nuclear waste?
So to say - hell with it, give me back my " " because some politician is using global warming to gain political power is very naive. Freons are banned not because of GW , but because of its damage to ozone layer. And guess what - freons use declined and ozone is slowly returning.
Not everything green freaks say is wrong.

Look, once scientist starting spewing the ludicrous claim that humans exhale a pollutant (CO2), they have gone out of their minds.

Nobody is saying there is no man made pollution. I am saying that global warming is NOT man made. Man cannot create global warming so man cannot prevent global warming. Simple really. The Earth MIGHT be getting a little warmer but it's due to the sun and other natural events. I am not even convinced the Earth is necessarily getting warmer.

Almost fell off my chair laughing! That's the funniest thing I've read all week!
I hope you don't mind ATSers using that line to apply to other taxes when having discussions about the truth of global warning.
