Teen Kills Sister Acting Out Mortal Kombat, Gets Suspended Sentence

www.dailytech.com

Teen Heather Trujillo gets 6-years suspended sentence at youth offender program after helping beat sister to death

A teen and her boyfriend from Johnstown, Colorado claimed that they were acting out the video game Mortal Kombat when they kicked, karate chopped, and body slammed 7-year-old Zoe Garcia. The two teens that attacked Garcia were her half-sister Heather Trujillo and her 17-year-old boyfriend Lamar Roberts.

Garcia later died at the hospital as a result of the beating she received from her sister and Roberts. This week, a judge in Weld County Colorado handed down a suspended sentence to Trujillo for her part in the beating death.

First of all, the game "Mortal Combat" is from the old days, I mean really old days. I mean come on "KICKED, KARATE CHOPPED, AND BODY SLAMMED" a "7 YEAR-OLD" because they learned it from a video game? Total excuse to reduce the sentencing.

Sigh... teens need to be educated more about violence and self control nowadays, they "lack moral fiber".

What in the world does that have to do with the story? A kid was murdered and you say oh a new game is coming out for the 360. Man, it's amazing this world.

Edited to add quotes. Just in case it was changed.

Wow, what is it with you and sidetracking threads today?

Anyway, I can't seem to find how old this Trujillo girl is. It seems like that would be a pertinent bit of information to the article. From the 6 year suspended sentence and judging from her picture, I'd say she's no older than 13 or 14... which by itself speaks volumes about the girl's family. A possible 13 or 14 year old dating a 17 year old... that's some grade 'A' parenting right there.

sickening! teens sure as hell know what damage can be done while doing this! what, the 7 year old must surely had been screaming her head off while this was happening. that by itself should say to those two, that hurts! that these two got that little of a sentence is a miscarriage of justice!

Another notch on the naughty pole of video games, and people will rant and rave, demanding more ratings and controls put on games, yadda yadda....

Where was the responsible parent in this case? No mention about that in the article.

And judging by the photograph, the half-sister doesn't look that much older than 7 years old herself.

Its just more pandering from yuppy parents who have nothing better to do than drink their artisan water and *snip* moan and groan about *snip* they're too lazy to deal with.

Blame it on a video game, eh?

then i guess we'd better ban books and pornography.
I mean - after all - they are partly responsible for the over-population on our planet, right?

Better ban the Koran- it was responsible for the 'extremeist' islam folk who commited the 9/11 terrorist attacks

I can't wait for the day that a yuppy house wife is standing up in a group of people rallying against video games, and someone stands up and Liu Kang bicycle kicks her out the door.

I just hate stupid, lazy people

They already did blame comics and movies before video games came along and became the new scapegoat.

Ugh... Jack Thompson is going to have a field day with this one.

And there may be newer versions of Mortal Kombat, but that doesn't mean they're any good or anyone plays them any more. Either way, they were clearly making up an excuse just so they didn't both look completely sociopathic.

Sounds like the girl is going to get off scott-free and they're going to blame it all on the 17 year old guy. Also, that article makes it sound like the 7 year old girl has a 17 year old boyfriend.

Haha, seconded.

If you were "on topic" in the first place then why did you say "lol back to topic" after that post?

Has anyone found out how old the girl is, yet? I searched for her name in other news stories and got nothing.

Because i wanted to . I see this as 2 separate topics . One a girl killed her sister. 2 there is a game called mortal combat .

Any relation to the 2 is purely coincidental imho.

Wow it amazes me that some can be so care free and uncaring about things like this and then add nothing valuable to a thread what so ever.

As for the young girl again this is just a lack of common sense that seems to be happening more and more with the youth of today. I mean what teen (13, 14, 15, 16, ect.) would think (or not think) that it is ok to do this to a child?

Even if they do not intend to kill or harm the girl where is the common sense that says “hey this could hurt her”? I then have to ask what are these parents teaching (or not teaching) their kids today. I would like to know what the judge was thinking. Just because “I seen it in whatever” or heard about it wherever” does not make it okay to act out.

There are a lot of people in the world today that need to be evaluated mentally.

Hmmm... I think care free would be coming in here asking if anyone knew "what finishing move" she used .

Now that would be dis-tasteful .

Reminds me of the old saying
"monkey see monkey do"

Now seriously how many people here when they were younger saw a Bruce lee, jet lee or Jacki Chan movie .
And didn't think right away they were a great martial arts master?
Knocking over lamps or what have you . If you say you didnt . You must have had a sad childhood.

But obviously we never (assuming) seriously hurt anyone . But im sure it could have happened to the best of us.

I have to find this completely disgusting. A teen girl would know not to act out a violent video game against a 6 year old, and the 17 year old boyfriend would definitely know better. Somehow this story didn't seem to settle with me and I don't believe it was an accident.

I'm guessing this will be another case where video games are thrown into the adult eye of being violent and downgrading their children.

Just popping to request that we please discuss the topic and not each other, it is an important issue and everyone is getting some good info out there, keep the personal post analysis down and the topic analysis up.

Let's figure out who or what is at fault, is it society, is it the games, is it the parents, is it the system?

I don't know, but I think if we all discussed it, we might get an answer.

The rest of the world doesn't seem to care,

I think you(we) do.

That means there is hope.

Sorry but I find care free to be coming in and discussing the new game that one can’t wait for that is coming out while not even acknowledging the events that took place. But that is me.

As for my sad childhood I was taught better than to do things that might hurt others. I was raised to hunt and use guns from the age of 8. I was taught to respect life of others and of creatures alike. I was taught not to do things that might hurt others and to think before I act. Also when I was growing up there were only three TV stations the worst they showed were the Three Stooges and I knew that was fake. I fact I was taught that TV and games are not real and that I should not be doing what I see them doing on either. Of course the games were the Atari when I was a teen so there was little chance of me acting out what I seen on those.

Just because I was raised to be slightly more intelligent than some teen that lacks common sense does not mean I had a sad childhood. But again it seems that most of the youth today are not being taught to be human. This is both the fault of the parents and the children.
