UK - 2 French bio chemistry research students in horrific murder

2 French bio chemistry research students with "bright futures" brutally murdered then set on fire in UK:

I wonder what they were researching exactly - something to do with DNA. They'd only been in the UK for 1 month, can't have upset someone enough that they'd want to stab you 243 times then set you on fire?

Speaking at a news conference at Scotland Yard, he said the flat had been broken into six days before and a laptop had been stolen.

Well seems a bit suspicious that their laptop was stolen.

But why were they killed six days after the laptop was taken?

It seems like there's a missing part to the story along the lines of the two frenchmen trying to get back the information they were working on.
