If the U.S. was destroyed over night, would anyone know?

With all discussions revolving around end of the world theories these days, here is a thought to chew on for a while...

Hypothetical scenario...

The Sun sets in 'Potato Land' and all have fallen to slumber. As the last door closes and blankets have been pulled close to the chin, a dream begins to hover over your mind...

Without warning, an unforeseen Meteor, roughly the size of Rhode Island strikes Potato Land at it's core, killing every soul for thousands of miles...

The big question is this...

Does Potato Land know it is no more?

There is a possible book in this, so I would really like some constructive thought.

If an asteroid the size of Rhode Island slammed into the United States, the result would be a global catastrophe of epic proportions. In short, everyone on the planet would know about it.

Asides from the sudden power-vacuum left behind by the psychic vortex of countless deaths*, i think America will probably know it's no longer there.

If not American civilians, then American troops stationed overseas.

your question seems to be contradictory to your thread title....

You title suggests would "anyone know if the US ceased to exist"
and your question (to me) suggests "would a person know if they, themselves, ceased to exist"

IE: IF you die, do you know you're dead?

While its a conundrum to ponder, i think ultimately the knee-jerk response would be

"no, you dont know you're dead"
until you bring spirituality into the picture, then of course, you know your earthly shell has been shed, and you proceed onto the next realm of existance.

Just my thoughts...

maybe a more pertinent question loaded with meaning, would be:

Would anyone care?

only joking

i dont think they would know to be honest.
